The central division Sudbury Wolves travelled west to face the west division Soo Greyhounds in Sault Ste Marie on Wednesday, February 23rd for an Ontario Hockey League for a midweek clash.
1:53 into the opening period, Owen Allard fires a snapshot from the left of Wolves goaltender Mitchell Weeks net to find the back of the Sudbury net between Weeks’ post and left shoulder to give the Greyhounds a 1 – 0 lead. Jack Thompson had the lone assist on Allard’s sixth of the season. To the left of Soo netminder Tucker Tynan’s net, Landon McCallum lifts a wrist shot over Tynan’s right shoulder to pull the Wolves even 1 – 1 at 6:04 of the middle stanza. David Goyette notched the helper on McCallum’s tying goal. With a pass from Nick DeGrazia from behind the left side of the Soo net, Ethan Larmand fires the go-ahead goal for Sudbury 27 seconds past the midway mark of the period. At 13:08, Robert Calisti catches a pass from Cole MacKay from the right corner to sink the tying goal over Weeks’ catcher to pull the Greyhounds even 2 – 2. Rory Kerins added the second contributor on Calisti’s 17th of the season. Through traffic from the top of the left faceoff circle, Kerins fires his 31st of the season past Week’s to give the hosts a 3 – 2 lead.
Kalvyn Watson tries to slide the puck to Tynan to cover the puck, but unfortunately the puck slide through the Greyhounds’ five hole to tie the game 3 – 3 for the Wolves. Evan Konyen was credited for Sudbury’s tying goal at 17:24. With 1:11 remaining in the second period, Watson swats Owen Allards rebound out of mid air into the back of the Wolves’ net to send the Soo into the second intermission up 4 – 3. Tyler Savard had the other assist on Watson’s eighth of the season. With Sudbury on a powerplay, former Greyhound defenseman Jacob Holmes fires a shoot along the ice through traffic from the centre of the blueline to tie the game 4 – 4 at 3:16 of the third. Goyette and Larmand had the contributors on Holmes sixth of the season. DeGrazia banks the puck off of the boards at the Sudbury blueline to skate on a breakaway to lift the Wolves fifth past Tynan’s blocker with an unassisted to give the visitors a 5 – 4 lead. Owen Allard catches a cross crease pass from Bryce McConnell Barker to slide the fifth goal under Weeks’ left pad to tie the game 5 – 5 for the Greyhounds at 15:41. Keegan McMullen notched the other assist on Allard’s second of the game. In a three on three overtime, Nolan Collins sinks the game winner with a pass from behind Tynan’s net from DeGrazia to give the Wolves a 6 – 5 win. Sudbury’s Mitchell Weeks turned away 37 of 42 shots while Greyhound netminder Tucker Tynan made 31 of 37 saves in the Soo’s midweek loss.
The Greyhounds will be back in action on February 25th and 26th when they host the London Knights in 7:07 p.m starts.
