The Soo U16 Greyhounds hosted the Sudbury U16 Wolves on Saturday, November 1st, and Sunday, November 2nd, at the John Rhodes Community Centre in Sault Ste. Marie for GNU18HL action. The Wolves came out strong on both days, skating away with a weekend sweep over the Greyhounds.
In Saturday’s matchup, Sudbury jumped out to an early lead with Lennox Therrien scoring his sixth of the season at 6:42 of the first period, assisted by Logan O’Shaughnessy. Later in the frame, Sam Whitney added his first of the year, with helpers from Nicholas Christakos and Alex Proulx, giving Sudbury a 2–0 advantage after twenty minutes.
The Wolves extended their lead early in the second when Therrien notched his second of the game — and seventh of the season — on the power play at 1:50, assisted by Tayden Smith and Bradley Huffman. The Greyhounds responded quickly, with Reegan Dezordo scoring his second of the season from Ethan Farquharson and Rocco Dos Reis at 3:29. Just minutes later, Logan Watson cut the deficit to one with his second of the year, assisted by Dezordo and Dos Reis. However, Sudbury answered back as Huffman scored unassisted at 6:23, followed by a power play goal from Merik Maillet at 16:29, assisted by O’Shaughnessy and Malik Jakubo, restoring a two-goal cushion.
In the third, the Greyhounds battled back with goals from Gage Guzzo at 8:20 (assisted by Ethan Cress and Simon McLean) and Bryson Palahnuk with just 43 seconds remaining (assisted by Benjamin McKinlay), but the comeback fell short as Sudbury held on for a 5–4 victory. Goaltenders were Nicholas Rocca for the Wolves and Phoenix Bell for the Greyhounds.
Game two on Sunday saw another strong showing from the Wolves, who carried their momentum into the rematch. Alex Proulx opened the scoring at 13:56 of the first period with his 12th goal of the season, assisted by Jackson Mead. Mead then doubled the Sudbury lead just minutes later, scoring unassisted at 16:27.
The second period saw no scoring, as both goaltenders — Ethan Brewer for the Greyhounds and Nick Jylha (a Sault Ste. Marie native now playing for Sudbury) — turned aside multiple quality chances. In the third, the Wolves sealed the win when Nicholas Christakos scored his ninth of the year at 17:15, assisted by Proulx, securing a 3–0 shutout victory.
