Looking for their first win in ten high school football seasons, the (0-1) White Pines Wolverines took to the field at Superior Heights on Thursday, September 15th to face the (0-1) Superior Heights Steelhawks in junior high school football action under rainy conditions in Sault Ste Marie.
55 seconds into the second quarter, Wolverine quarterback Garrin Pine rushes the ball for a five yard touchdown to give White Pines a 6 – 0 lead. Ethan McCorkell found the uprights for a Wolverines convert to bring the lead to 7 – 0. With the Wolverines on Superior Heights one yard line, quarterback Garrin Pine scores his second major of the contest with 29 seconds remaining in the half with a one yard carry. With McCorkell’s convert successful, the Wolverines lead increased to 14 – 0. At 1:40 of the third, McCorkell evades four tackles to run a Wolverine 76 yard touchdown carry to increase the lead to 21 – 0 after McCorkell’s kicks the convert after his own touchdown. Finding the end zone for the lone Steelhawk touchdown, Dylan Woolton rushes for a 47 yard carry at 6:07 of the fourth. With a Steelhawk convert, the final for the junior matchup was a Wolverine 28 – 7 win.
Superior Heights coach Jared Klooster told Saultsports that “the Wolverines deserved the win, and we have a lot of players who are new to football. Basic fundamentals (tackling/blocking) will have to improve for us to be competitive. We took some untimely penalties which also held us back.”
“The overall win feeling is indescribable right now; our boys took every challenge we have thrown at them head on and this is the clear results. For our Program this victory is enormous, we want student athletes to take pride in the Pines again. We want kids to want to come to White Pines for whatever reason, whether our New Trades program, our Indigenous programs, etc. This staff is incredible and gives everything they have in order to make time for our athletes,” added Wolverine coach Will Basawa.
