The Sault U18 Sabercats continued their search for their first victory of the 2026 Ontario Summer Football League (OSFL) AAA season on Saturday, June 13, but were unable to overcome an explosive Cornwall Wildcats offense, falling 45-7 at Superior Heights Field.

The Sabercats entered the contest looking to bounce back from a 48-10 road loss to the Kingston Grenadiers on June 6, while the Wildcats arrived in Sault Ste. Marie after dropping a 33-15 decision to the Cumberland Panthers.

Playing under grey skies and gusty winds, Cornwall established control early and never looked back.

The Wildcats opened the scoring at the 9:43 mark of the first quarter when Hunter Holmes powered his way into the end zone from two yards out. Abbas Gedeon added the extra point to give the visitors a 7-0 lead.

Just four minutes later, Holmes struck again, finding the end zone for his second touchdown of the afternoon at 5:43. Gedeon’s convert increased Cornwall’s advantage to 14-0.

The Sabercats answered late in the opening quarter. With 35.4 seconds remaining, Payton Melchiorre broke free for a spectacular 65-yard touchdown run to energize the home crowd. AJ Coccimiglio converted the extra point, cutting the deficit to 14-7 after one quarter.

Cornwall regained momentum in the second quarter behind the arm of quarterback Peter Constantinidis. At 11:43, Constantinidis connected with Logan O’Hagan on a 39-yard pass before O’Hagan carried the ball the final 11 yards into the end zone. Gedeon’s conversion stretched the Wildcats’ lead to 21-7.

The visitors struck again at the 3:03 mark of the quarter when Constantinidis found Owen McLean in the Sabercat end zone on a 32-yard touchdown pass. Another successful conversion from Gedeon increased the lead to 28-7.

Before halftime, Holmes completed a dominant first half by recording his third touchdown of the contest with 1:21 remaining. Gedeon’s extra point sent Cornwall into the locker room with a commanding 35-7 lead.

The Wildcats continued to pour on the offense in the second half. At 9:23 of the third quarter, Holmes produced the play of the game, returning the ball the length of the field for another touchdown. A successful converted pass to Logan O’Hagan pushed Cornwall’s lead to 42-7.

The final points came with 1:39 remaining in the third quarter when Gedeon connected on a 38-yard field goal, giving the Wildcats a 45-7 advantage and completing the scoring.

Despite the setback, the Sabercats will have little time to dwell on the loss as they prepare for another important home matchup next weekend.
