After opening their three game road trip with losses in North Bay and Barrie on Thursday, January 12th and Saturday, January 14th, the fifth place (12-16-7-4) west division Soo Greyhounds headed back to Northern Ontario for an afternoon matinee on Sunday, January 15th against the fourth place (15-18-3-1) central division Sudbury Wolves.
At 14:49 of the opening period, Nolan Collins fires a slapshot from the left blueline to find the back of Greyhound netminder Samuel Ivanov to give the Wolves a 1 – 0 lead. Ethan Larmand and Landon McCallum had the assists on Collins fourth of the season. Kalvyn Watson sends a pass from behind Sudbury goaltender Kevyn Brassard to Brenden Sirizzotti to find the back of the Wolves net to even the game 1 – 1 for the Soo. Kirill Kudryavstev had the other helper on Sirizzotti’s eleventh of the season at 6:51 of the second. Former Greyhound, Marc Boudreau fires a snapshot from the top of the right faceoff circle under Ivanov’s catcher to give the Wolves a 2 – 1 lead at 13:03 of the middle stanza. Andre Anania and Jakub Chromiak added the contributors on Bourdeau’s fourth of the season. Scoring his second of the season, Caeden Carlisle catches a from the right of Brassard’s net from Alex Kostov, Carlisle finds the back of Brassard’s net through the Sudbury goaltender’s five hole to tie the game 2 – 2 for the Soo at the 9:01 mark of the third. Connor Clattenburg drew the other helper on Carlisle’s tying goal. After no scoring in the three on three overtime, Greyhounds Bryce McConnell-Baker and Kalvyn Watson sinks shootout goals to give the Soo a 3 – 2 win over the Wolves in Sudbury. Sudbury goaltender Kevyn Brassard stopped 19 of 21 shots in the Wolves 3 – 2 loss while in his seventeenth straight start Samuel Ivanov turned away 40 of 42 shots in the Greyhounds 3 – 2 shootout win.
Next up for the Greyhounds will be a midweek clash when the Saginaw Spirit come into Sault Ste Marie on Wednesday, January 18th for a 7:07 p.m puck drop.
