The Algoma Wrestling Team had another successful competition in St Catharines, Ontario to add to the books! On January 14th, the team attended the Brock Invitational, and they did not disappoint.
Lilah Fraser has led a strong season thus far. Consistently placing at previous meets in 2022, she was able to medal once again. Fraser placed third in the 76kg category (2-1). “I wasn’t happy with my loss, but thought I did a good job of rebounding. The mental preparation and toughness aspect of the sport is something we have been working on, so to see success there is as important in this point of my development as the technical part on the mats,” says Fraser.
At the time of writing, Lilah is ranked fifth in the 76kg category in USports.
New to this season is Kyle Price. Originally competing in the 90kg category in 2019, he has now returned to competition in the 100kg category. Price went 3-0 in his competition, bringing home his first gold medal at his first meet of the season! “Having taken 2 and a half years off, it felt great to get back on the mats for the Thunderbirds. My conditioning wasn’t quite where I want it at this point, and I felt a little rusty, but overall I felt prepared and thought I had a good first performance,” says Price.
We are excited to see what the team brings for the rest of 2023. Currently, the women are ranked #9 in the country.
The team’s next competition will be at Western on January 29th.
