U16 Sabercats Handed their First Loss of the Season, Falling to Skyhawks in Belleville

After a hard-fought tie in Toronto against the York Lions on June 14th, the third-place (3-0-2) Sault U16 Sabercats traveled to Belleville for a pivotal week six matchup against the fifth-place Quinte Skyhawks (3-2) in Ontario Summer Football League ‘AA’ action. Battling through warm and humid conditions, the Sabercats were handed their first loss of the season, falling 34–15 to a determined Skyhawks squad.

The Sabercats found the end zone twice in the contest. JJ Perrault-Didier powered in an 11-yard touchdown run, while quarterback Brett Koski connected with receiver Drew Albury for a 30-yard strike in the Quinte end zone. The Sabercats also capitalized on a conceded safety by the Skyhawks for two additional points, and Nick Matilla added a successful convert to round out the scoring for the visiting Sault side.

Stepping in for the absent of head coach Will Basawa, Jim Monico told Saultsports that ““it was a hot day for sure, and we came out flat. “We just never found our rhythm, and against a good team like Quinte, that cost us.”

With the result, the Sabercats’ record moves to 3-1-2 as they head into a well-earned bye week on June 28th. The team will return to action for their final regular season home game on Saturday, July 5th, hosting their northern Ontario rivals, the Sudbury Spartans, in what promises to be a spirited showdown.
