U15 Greyhounds Earn Road Series Win Over Wolves in High-Scoring NOHA AAA Weekend in Sudbury

The Soo U15 Greyhounds traveled east over the weekend of March 7–8 to take on the Sudbury U15 Wolves in a three-game road series in Northern Ontario AAA Hockey League action. The weekend featured plenty of offense from both clubs as the Greyhounds battled through three competitive games, ultimately capturing two of the three contests.

The opening game on Saturday afternoon proved to be a back-and-forth contest filled with momentum swings.

Sudbury opened the scoring at 10:19 of the first period when Van Sakellaris scored his 5th goal of the season, assisted by Padraig Courtney and Jonathan Croome, giving the Wolves a 1–0 lead.

The Wolves extended their advantage at 8:12 when Linden Bertoli netted his first goal of the season, with assists again going to Padraig Courtney and Jonathan Croome to make it 2–0.

The Greyhounds answered late in the period. At 2:13, Gavyn Nevers scored his 11th of the season, assisted by Matti Lappalainen, cutting the Sudbury lead to 2–1.

In the second period, Sudbury regained a two-goal cushion. At 13:55, Jonathan Croome scored his 12th goal of the season on the power play, with assists from Padraig Courtney and Andre Beaudry, making it 3–1.

The Greyhounds responded quickly at 12:43 as Haydon Eby scored his 13th goal of the season, assisted by Wyatt Jarrett and Thomas Ubaldi, pulling the Soo within one at 3–2.

Sudbury restored the two-goal lead again at 3:38 when Cameron Swartz scored his 6th of the season, assisted by Connor Wainio and Maximus Falcioni to make it 4–2.

The Greyhounds refused to back down. At 2:20, Gavyn Nevers scored his second of the game and 12th of the season, assisted by Jayden Fisher-Ruck and Benjamin Campbell, cutting the lead to 4–3.

The Soo continued their comeback in the third period. At 19:32, Matti Lappalainen tied the game 4–4 with his 33rd goal of the season, assisted by Benjamin Campbell and Lukas Maninos.

The Greyhounds briefly took the lead at 9:43 when Jasper Jarratt scored his 9th of the season, assisted by Hayden Brason-Doan, making it 5–4 Soo.

Sudbury answered on the power play at 7:33 as Vince Tarini scored his 11th of the season, assisted by Padraig Courtney and Andre Beaudry, tying the game 5–5.

The Wolves would get the final say at 1:54, when Van Sakellaris scored his second goal of the game and 6th of the season, assisted by Padraig Courtney and Jonathan Croome, giving Sudbury the 6–5 win.

In net for the Greyhounds was Carter Rome while the Wolves Max Barros was between the pipes in the win.

Game two of the weekend, the Greyhounds bounced back in Saturday evening’s matchup, which required overtime to determine a winner.

Sudbury struck first at 10:19 of the opening period when Cameron Swartz scored his 7th goal of the season on the power play, assisted by Linden Bertoli, giving the Wolves a 1–0 lead.

The Greyhounds responded in the second period. At 5:17, Lukas Maninos tied the game 1–1 with his 19th goal of the season, assisted by Barrett McCabe.

Just 40 seconds later at 4:37, Maninos struck again, scoring his 20th goal of the season and second of the game, assisted by Wyatt Jarrett and Jayden Fisher-Ruck, giving the Soo a 2–1 lead.

Sudbury tied things shortly after at 2:00 when Padraig Courtney scored his 18th goal of the season shorthanded, assisted by Vince Tarini, making it 2–2.

After a scoreless third period, the game moved to overtime.

At 3:23 of overtime, Jayden Fisher-Ruck ended the game with his 15th goal of the season, scoring unassisted to give the Greyhounds a 3–2 overtime victory.

Goaltenders for game two of the weekend series, the Soo had Ben Clayton in net while at the other end of the ice Sudbury had Brayden Bouillon in the between the pipes.

Game three and the final game of the weekend, the Sunday morning finale was another offensive battle as the Greyhounds closed out the series with a victory.

The Soo opened the scoring just 1:13 into the first period when Haydon Eby scored his 14th goal of the season, unassisted, giving the Greyhounds a 1–0 lead.

Sudbury tied the game at 14:33 of the second period when Connor Wainio scored his 7th of the season, assisted by Blake Bubalo.

At 13:08, Jonathan Croome gave Sudbury a 2–1 lead with his 13th goal of the season, assisted by Padraig Courtney.

The Greyhounds responded on the power play at 8:53 as Matti Lappalainen scored his 34th goal of the season, assisted by Lukas Maninos and Wyatt Jarrett, tying the game 2–2.

Just 57 seconds later at 7:56, Jasper Jarratt scored his 10th goal of the season on the power play, assisted by Jayden Fisher-Ruck and Hayden Brason-Doan, giving the Soo a 3–2 lead.

Sudbury answered again at 5:26 as Jonathan Croome scored his second of the game and 14th of the season, assisted by Padraig Courtney and Blake Bubalo, tying the game 3–3.

The Soo regained the lead at 1:38 when Lukas Maninos scored his 21st goal of the season, assisted by Wyatt Jarrett and Matti Lappalainen.

Just 54 seconds later, Sudbury tied it again at 0:44 when Andre Beaudry scored his 11th goal of the season, assisted by Carson Barr and Padraig Courtney.

The Greyhounds struck in dramatic fashion at 0:02, when Haydon Eby scored his second of the game and 15th of the season, assisted by Lukas Maninos and Bryce Perrott, giving the Soo a 5–4 lead heading into the third period.

Sudbury tied the game early in the third period at 14:11 when Maximus Falcioni scored his 4th of the season shorthanded, unassisted.

The Greyhounds then pulled away with three consecutive goals.

At 12:08, Jasper Jarratt scored his 11th goal of the season on the power play, assisted by Matti Lappalainen, restoring the Soo lead 6–5.

Just 49 seconds later at 11:19, Hayden Brason-Doan added his 13th goal of the season on the power play, assisted by Haydon Eby and Jayden Fisher-Ruck, making it 7–5.

The Greyhounds extended the lead at 4:53 when Gregory Beckerson scored his 7th goal of the season, assisted by Jayden Fisher-Ruck and Wyatt Jarrett, pushing the score to 8–5.

Sudbury added a late power-play goal at 1:36 when Jonathan Croome completed the scoring with his 15th goal of the season, assisted by Cameron Swartz and Andre Beaudry, making the final 8–6 Soo.

Goaltenders for the Greyhounds was Carter Rome along with Max Barros back in net for the Wolves.

With the two victories in the three-game set, the Soo U15 Greyhounds returned home with valuable points in the Northern Ontario AAA Hockey League standings after an entertaining and high-scoring weekend series in Sudbury.
