Over the November 7th and 8th weekend, the Algoma Thunderbird women’s and men’s basketball teams hit the road for a tough two-game OUA swing through southwestern Ontario, facing the Western Mustangs in London on Friday before heading to Windsor on Saturday to meet the Lancers.
In Friday’s matchup against Western, the Thunderbird women fell 78–44 to the Mustangs. Brooke Gruhn led Algoma’s offense with eight points and four rebounds over 35 minutes of play, while Riya Donnelly and Ryan Zimmer each contributed eight points. For Western, Ainsley Lane led the way with 15 points, while Sydney Cowan and Emily Capretta added 11 and nine respectively.
On Saturday in Windsor, the Thunderbirds faced another strong opponent as the Lancers took a 76–43 win. Bernadette Maranan paced Algoma with 11 points and three rebounds in 25 minutes of action, while Gruhn added 10 points and Donnelly recorded eight points and seven rebounds. Windsor’s Kali Grootenboer dominated in the paint with 14 points and 13 rebounds, supported by Julia Chiarot’s 13-point performance.
On the men’s side, the Thunderbirds battled hard but came up short against both Western and Windsor. In London, Algoma dropped an 87–61 decision to the Mustangs. Kal-El Alejo led all Thunderbirds with 17 points, while Logan Whitmell added 15 points and seven rebounds. Western’s Lucas Sheets powered the Mustangs’ offense with 19 points and seven rebounds.
In Saturday’s contest in Windsor, Alejo once again led the way with 18 points in Algoma’s 72–41 loss. Whitmell contributed 10 points and six rebounds, while Biong Deng added five points. Windsor’s offensive depth was on display as Yohann Sam and Matt Aebersold each notched 18 and 19 points, respectively.
With their weekend road trip behind them, the Thunderbirds return home to the George Leach Centre on Sunday, November 16th, where they’ll host the Lakehead Thunderwolves. Tip-off is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. (women) and 2:00 p.m. (men) as Algoma looks to rebound in front of their home crowd.
