At the Rankin Arena on Monday, February 23rd, the Korah Colts and the Superior Heights Steelhawks opened the 2026 Sault Ste. Marie Girl’s High School Hockey League City Championship best-of-three series, with both teams looking to seize an early edge. It was the visiting Superior Heights Steelhawks who jumped out in front and ultimately skated away with a 4–3 victory over the Korah Colts, taking a 1–0 lead in the series.

Superior Heights wasted little time setting the tone in the opening period. At 10:48, Zara Zavoral opened the scoring with her first goal of the postseason, finishing a play set up by Alexe Villebrun. The Steelhawks doubled their lead at 6:53 when Maelle Brown found the back of the net for her first of the playoffs, with Ava Mount earning the assist, sending Superior Heights into the intermission up 2–0.

The Steelhawks continued to control the game in the second period. At 14:34, Grace Curran extended the lead to 3–0, converting on a feed from Alexe Villebrun, who picked up her second assist of the contest.

Korah pushed back in the third period, cutting into the deficit at 14:20 when Harlee Cote scored her fourth goal of the postseason on an unassisted effort to make it 3–1. Superior Heights answered quickly, however, as Matthea Brown restored the three-goal cushion at 1:58 with an unassisted marker of her own.

The Colts mounted a late rally in the final minutes. At 1:30, Journey Tegosh scored her second goal of the postseason with help from Emily Sewell and Amy Clement to make it 4–2. Just 25 seconds later, Sarah Sousa brought Korah within one, scoring her first playoff goal off assists from Harlee Cote—who recorded her second point of the game—and Aubrey Colletti. Despite the late surge, the Steelhawks held on through the final seconds to secure the win.

Between the pipes, Kaydence Wardell backstopped Superior Heights, while Britton Notte handled goaltending duties for Korah.

Game two of the 2026 Sault Ste. Marie Girl’s High School Hockey League City Championship series is set for Wednesday, February 25th at the Rankin Arena, with the Steelhawks holding a 1–0 advantage in the best-of-three showdown.
