Steel City Ignite Competes at 2022 OVA Beach Volleyball Championships

Sault Ste. Marie’s Steel City Ignite Volleyball Club had two teams qualify for the 2022 Ontario Volleyball Association Beach Championships held at Ashbridge Beach in Toronto, Ontario on July 30th and 31st 2022.

Qualifying for the Championship 15U Division was Lauren Doyle-Moran and Sophie Lamour who came into the tournament ranked 1st in the province. Qualifying for the 17U Premier Division was Taya Venerri and Juliette Lamour who came in ranked 13th in the province.

Saturdays Round Robin play saw Doyle-Moran/Lamour play three matches where they won 2 sets and lost 6. Venerri/Lamour also played 3 matches, winning 3 sets and losing 5.

Sunday’s play saw the teams seeded based on their results for the Finals. Dyole-Moran/Lamour were eliminated in the round of 12 losing in straight sets. The U15 Girls division was won by A. Lonardi/ T. Wilson of the Pakmen Volleyball Club out of Mississauga, Ontario.

Venerri/Lamour lost in straight sets in the quarter finals round. The U17 Girls Division was won by S. Gilbank/O. Odigie representing Team Ontario.

Steel City Ignite’s Annette Lamour said: “It wasn’t the result we were hoping for but we’re proud of our teams today. Both teams played very competitively but fell short of the medal round. These girls worked very hard to qualify for the Championships in their first season of competition and are paving the way for the club’s beach program in the future.”
