At the John Rhodes Centre on Thursday, January 15th, the Korah Colts welcomed the St. Mary’s Knights in Sault Ste. Marie Boy’s High School Hockey League action, just four days after the Colts handed the Knights a decisive 10–1 loss. This time around, St. Mary’s showed more push early, but Korah’s depth and special teams once again proved to be the difference in a 4–1 Colts victory.
The Knights came out with energy in the opening period and were rewarded midway through the frame. At 9:04, Cole Bailey opened the scoring for St. Mary’s, finishing off a play set up by Owen Brown to give the Knights a 1–0 lead and some early momentum.
Korah responded with pressure of their own and capitalized on the power play late in the period. With 3:55 remaining, Koen Manchulenko buried his league-leading 23rd goal of the season, converting a setup from Donny Hernden to knot the game at 1–1 heading into the first intermission.
The second period belonged to the Colts. Korah took control of the game with sustained offensive-zone time and quick puck movement that stretched the Knights’ defense. At 13:22, Preston Miller gave the Colts their first lead of the night, finishing a play from Bodie Belair and Tyler Neveau to make it 2–1.
Just over a minute later, Korah struck again. Deago Campagna continued his strong season, scoring his 20th goal at 11:57 off a feed from Tyler Lang to extend the lead to 3–1. The Colts weren’t finished, as Donny Hernden capped off the scoring at 10:38, netting his first goal of the season with assists from Will Pusch and Manchulenko, pushing the advantage to 4–1.
The third period featured tight checking and disciplined defensive play from both sides. Neither team was able to find the back of the net, as goaltenders Will Franic for Korah and Aaron Juma for St. Mary’s stood tall to close out the contest.
With the win, the Colts once again asserted themselves against the Knights, building on their dominant performance from earlier in the week. St. Mary’s will look to bounce back on Friday, January 16th, when they face the CASS Huskies in a 7:30 p.m. start at the John Rhodes Centre. Korah will also be back in action that night, taking on the White Pines Wolverines with a 9:00 p.m. puck drop at the same venue.
