Sault Surge Aquatic Team Wins the 2026 Superior Shores Challenge Cup

The Sault Surge recently hosted the third annual Superior Shores Challenge cup meet over the April 24 to 26 weekend. A record 93 local swimmers swam to 593 personal best times and scored 8360.5 points to ensure that the Challenge Cup trophy remains in the Surge trophy case. The Surge picked up 6231 points to win the trophy in 2025.

Over 160 swimmers represented clubs from Thunder Bay, Blenheim, Temiskaming Shores, and Sturgeon Falls. Local varsity athlete Kevin Li attended the meet representing his squad from Mount Allison University.

Judah Erickson, 12, Andrew Li, 16, and Sophia Li, 14, set 7 club records over the weekend to go along with their respective medal winning performances.

Surge swimmers picked up 60 gold medals, 70 silver medals and 62 bronze medals for a total medal count of 192. Thunder Bay Thunderbolts led the gold medal count with 63 gold, but second overall in the medal count with 157.

20 Surge Swimmers picked up gold medals along the way and 11 Sault Surge relay teams won relay events at the meet.

Adam Abassy, 13, Oliver Bennetto, 15, Lenden Ellis, 15, Elijah Erickson, 13, Judah Erickson, 12, Sophia Li, 14, Emily Skeggs, 8, Angela Thomson, 13, Emma Vallee, 14, all swam to over 10 personal best times through the weekend.

The Surge will continue to train for meets into May and the summer. Upcoming travels take the team to Thunder Bay, Timmins and to Toronto for the Ontario Swimming Championships.
