Hundreds of athletes from across Canada gathered at the Windsor International Training and Aquatic Centre this past weekend to compete as part of the Speedo Eastern Canadian Swimming Championship. Local athlete Paige Banton represented Sault Surge Aquatic Team (SSAT) at the event.
Paige previously qualified to race her best events including the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke and the 200m individual medley. She swam personal bests in almost every race, securing gold medals in all three breaststroke events and qualifying in all 4 events for the upcoming Speedo Canadian Swimming Championships to be held in Toronto this coming August. Paige is no stranger to national level competitions having been a national qualifier since she was 12 years old. Just this past fall, she had the opportunity to represent SSAT on the world stage at the 2022 FINA Swimming World Cup where she set personal best times and new short course club records in all of her breaststroke events.
Paige is currently in her third year at Marshall University in West Virginia, with her academic focus on the Dietetics program and the goal of becoming a registered dietician upon graduation. Paige spends most of the year training with the Marshall University Swimming and Diving team under Head Coach Ian Walsh who had this to say about Bantaon “Paige did a wonderful job navigating this championship season. To accomplish what she did over the last four weeks was really impressive. Our staff and team members are incredibly proud of what Paige had done and continues to do for this program. Very few individuals get an opportunity to compete at her level. I look forward to working alongside Paige during her journey and excited for what lies ahead in her career.”
While Paige is here in Canada, she trains with SSAT and appears on behalf of her home club at various levels of competition. SSAT is extremely proud of Paige and her continued representation of the club on the national and international stage. Dedicated student athletes like her develop strength and endurance in their sport through hours of training each week while maintaining academic excellence.
