In their second game in two days and coming off a 5 – 4 overtime win at home in Sault Ste Marie on Wednesday, December 29th over the Sudbury Wolves, the first place (16-9-2) Soo Greyhounds took to I75 to travel down to Saginaw on Thursday, December 30th to close out the 2021 portion of the 2021 – 2022 OHL season with a west division clash against the fourth place Saginaw Spirit. The Greyhounds took to the ice in first with 34 pts while the Spirit sit nine points back with 25 points in the west.
Sault Ste Marie native Camaryn Baber sends a pass to Saginaw’s Matyas Sapovaliv to find the back of the Greyhound netminder Tucker Tynan’s net over the Soo netminder’s right pad to give the hosts a 1 – 0 lead with only two seconds remaining in the opening period. Dean Loukus added the other helper on Sapovaliv’s tenth of the season. 48 seconds into the second period with a pass from the left of Saginaw goaltender Andrew Oke’s net from Bryce McConnell-Barker, Greyhound Marco Mignosa fires his seventh of the season through Oke’s five hole to even the game 1 – 1 for the Soo. At 13:54 of the third from the right faceoff circle Sault Ste Marie native Calem Mangone scores his eighth of the season through Tynan’s five hole with a snap shot to give the Spirit a 2 – 1 win over the visiting Greyhounds. Saginaw captain Camaryn Baber drew the lone assist on Mangone’s game winner. Saginaw goaltender Andrew Oke stopped 25 of 26 shots in the Spirit win while Greyhound netminder Tucker Tynan turned away 28 of 30 shots in the Soo’s 2 – 1 loss.
The Soo’s next game will be in Sudbury on Sunday, January 2nd against the Wolves in a 2:07 p.m puck drop.
