Sault Ste Marie, Ontario 20 year old Lucas Theriault has committed to the York Lions for the 2021 – 2022 OUA hockey season. In the last two seasons, the Sault Ste Marie forward has played for the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Soo Thunderbirds and the Ontario Hockey League’s Niagara IceDogs.
In 2017 -2019 with the NOJHL Thunderbirds, Theriault scored 51 goals and added 48 assists in 86 regular season matchups in Sault Ste Marie. The 5’8” and 165 lbs forward tallied 51 minutes in penalties in 86 regular season games. In 32 post season games with his hometown Thunderbirds, Lucas sank 16 goals and had 16 contributors from 2017 – 2019. In the fall of 2019 during his second junior ‘A’ season with the Thunderbirds, Theriault represented the NOJHL on Team NOJHL West at the 2018 Eastern Canada Cup All-Star Challenge in Trenton, Ontario. During the 2018 – 2019 NOJHL season, Lucas had the most goals in the league with 40 along registering the most points that season with 76. In the spring of 2019, Theriault was named the most improved player in the NOJHL as well as being named to the NOJHL Second All-Star Team.
In 2016 in the Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection Draft, Theriault was selected 224th overall in the 12th round with the Niagara IceDogs. As a 19 year old in the OHL with the IceDogs, the Sault Ste Marie hockey player scored five goals and added six assists to his 2019 – 2020 season totals with Niagara in 48 OHL regular season games.
Theriault told Saultsports.com that “I’m super excited to commit to the York Lions and can’t wait to get started in September! I chose York because they offer a fantastic hockey program and a great education experience. I believe I can offer my hard work, scoring ability and determination to the team to hopefully win a championship in the near future. Excited to take on this new opportunity!”
