Sabercats Fall in U16 OSFL Semi Final Against Bulldogs in Sault Ste Marie

After a 26 – 7 quarter final post season Ontario Summer Football League contest in Sault Ste Marie over the Brantford Bisons in Sault Ste Marie on July 20th, the Sault Sabercats took to the turf at Superior Heights for a Saturday, July 27th matchup against the Brampton Bulldogs in semi final OSFL action.

Israel Goulbourne opened the scoring for the Bulldogs with a 22 yard carry into the Sabercats endzone to give the visitors a 6 – 0 lead at 4:53 of the opening quarter. With 7:57 remaining in the first half, Sabercat quarterback Zayne Murdoch fires a 22 yard pass to Gevin Grisdale to run a 52 yard carry to even the game 6 – 6 for the Sault. Murdoch and Grisdale combined for the Sabercats second major for the matchup at 2:41 of the second quarter with a nine yard pass to give the Sault a 12 – 6 lead. Demario Daley runs for a Brampton touchdown for a 12 yard carry to even the game for the Bulldogs with 44.2 seconds left in the half to send the OSFL semi final into halftime tied 12 – 12. AJ Coccimiglio gives the Sabercats a 13 – 12 lead with kicking the ball through the Bulldogs endzone for a rouge. Bulldogs Kymani Stanley and quarterback Joseph Ferlito combined on Brampton’s next major at 7:49 of the third with a 73 yard pass/run to bring the lead to 18 – 13. Enzo D’Onorio added the extra point for Brampton increasing the lead to 19 – 13. With 93 seconds left in the third quarter and a missed field goal for Coccimiglio, the Sault picks up a point for a Sabercat rouge to close the gap to 19 – 14. With only 2.8 seconds remaining in the third, Ferlito carried the ball through a tough Sabercat defensive line to give the Bulldogs a 25 – 14 lead.

At 8:59 of the fourth, Sabercat Payton Melchiorre runs a one yard touchdown carry through Brampton’s defensive line to bring the Sault within six points. Coccimiglio’s extra point attempt was blocked by a Bulldog defensive lineman. With 2:33 in the semi final Brampton Antonio Pinatario intercepted a Zayne Murdoch pass to return the ball for a Bulldog 42 yard carry to bring the visitors lead to 33 – 20 after a D’Onorio extra point. The Sabercats conceded a safety with 2:01 left in the game to increase the lead to 34 – 20. With 93 seconds remaining in the Sault’s 2024 OSFL season, Kyle Petricca cements the Bulldogs semi final win with a Brampton major to give the Bulldogs a 41 – 20 win after a D’Onorio extra point.
