On Monday, December 5th, the St Mary’s Knights took to the ice at the John Rhodes Centre to finish the Superior Heights Steelhawks in Sault Ste Marie High School Hockey League action.

At 6:51 of the opening period, Carmine Perna catches a cross ice pass from Daniel Bumbaco to find the back of Steelhawk netminder Tyler Greco to give the Knights a 1 – 0 lead. Adrian O’Dell drew the other assist on Perna’s goal. Nineteen later, Gabe Zimbaro picks up a Bumbaco rebound to lift St Mary’s second goal over Greco’s catcher to give the Knights a 2 – 0 lead. Perna notched the other helper on Zimbaro’s goal. With Greco on the let side of his net, Zimbaro fires the Knights third into the right side of the open net to bring the lead to 3 – 0 at the 4:29 mark of the first. With Superior Heights on a powerplay with 2:12 remaining in the opening period, Owen Case finds the back of Knight goaltender Liam Dubois net through traffic from between the face off circles to pull the Steelhawks within two. Connor Ouimette and Clark Parker added the contributors on Case’s powerplay marker. O’Dell cuts across the Steelhawk blueline to rifle a snapshot from the top of the left faceoff circle over Greco’s blocker to increase St Mary’s lead to 4 – 1 at 1:55. Caden MacInnes had the lone assist on O’Dell’s goal.

With two seconds left in the opening period, Nathan Whitely picks up a loose puck in the Knights crease to slide the Steelhawks second of the contest through Dubois’ five hole to close the gap to two. Liam Willet and Michael Wiest contributed on Whitely’s goal. Unassisted, Whitely sinks his second of the game with a Superior Hights powerplay goal at 9:09 of the second under Dubois’ right pad to pull the Steelhawks within one. Perna picks up his own rebound off of Greco to give the Knights a two goal lead at 4:51 with Bumbaco adding the helper on Perna’s second of the game. From the top of the left faceoff circle, Koen Kurylo fires a shot on Greco to be tipped by Carter Lidstone at 3:58 to give St Mary’s a 6 – 3 lead. Darion Perrault scored the Knights seventh of the game at 12:29 of the third period with an unassisted St Mary’s goal. Zimbaro cuts across Tyler Greco’s crease to slide St Mary’s eighth under the Steelhawk netminder’s catcher at 12:08 of the period. With the Knights on a powerplay, O’Dell fires a snapshot from the left blueline to find the back of Greco’s net over the Superior Height netminder’s catcher to give the Knights a 9 – 3 win over the Steelhawks. Kurylo earned his second point of the game with the lone contributor on O’Dell’s fourth point of the game.

Next up in high school hockey will be on Wednesday, December 14th when the Knights take on the Korah Colts in a 3:30 p.m puck drop while the Steelhawks face St Mary’s on Thursday, December 15th for a 3;30 p.m start. Both games will take place at the John Rhodes Centre.
