Late Touchdown Sinks U18 Sabercats in 2026 OSFL AAA Season Opener Against North Toronto on the Road

The Sault U18 Sabercats opened a new chapter in program history on Sunday, May 17th as they kicked off their 2026 Ontario Summer Football League season against the North Toronto Sentinels at Esther Shiner Civic Stadium in Toronto, Ontario. It also marked the debut of new Sabercats head coach Cody Wheten as the club officially moved into the OSFL ‘AAA’ division over the offseason.

The Sabercats showed they were ready to compete at the higher level, battling the Sentinels right down to the final minutes before falling in heartbreaking fashion by a 15-12 final.

After a scoreless opening quarter for both teams offensively, the Sabercats struck first late in the frame when AJ Coccimiglio connected on a 28-yard field goal with just 34.6 seconds remaining to give Sault a 3-0 advantage.

The defensive battle continued into the third quarter before North Toronto found momentum midway through the frame. The Sentinels marched down the field and capped off the drive with a four-yard touchdown pass before adding a 53-yard rushing play during the possession. The successful convert pushed the Sentinels ahead 7-3.

The Sabercats answered back later in the quarter. With 3:22 remaining in the third, Sault quarterback Garrin Pine delivered a ten-yard touchdown pass into the Sentinels endzone to Ren Levesque to reclaim the lead for the visitors. Following the major, Coccimiglio added the extra point to give the Sabercats a 10-7 edge heading into the fourth quarter.

Sault added to its lead early in the final quarter when the Sentinels conceded a safety with 3:20 remaining, extending the Sabercats advantage to 12-7.

However, North Toronto mounted one final drive in the closing minutes. With just 1:15 left on the clock, the Sentinels broke through with a 19-yard rushing touchdown before adding the successful convert to secure the 15-12 comeback victory.

Sabercat coach Cody Wheten told Saultsports that “we played with grit and a chip on our shoulder. There were lots of players making plays on the defensive and offensive side of the ball. I think we’re still looking for our offensive identity, but the hard work is paying off and I’m positive we’ll move in the right direction. Overall, I have a lot of faith in our coaches and players and I’m happy with the way we battled. We have a very tough but young team, and I’m excited for how they will play throughout the season. We had tons of QB pressures, some turnovers, great instinctual moments from our QB, and the Online played a good game against a tough defense. I’m proud of them.”

Sabercat veteran Payton Melchiorre told Saultsports that “I think there’s quite a few positives to take from that game. Hats off to the defence, they kept us in that game and made it close. As an offence, there was good and bad, we showed flashes but what we need to do is perfect the small details and become more consistent as a whole. There’s potential with this group, and there’s lots of season left. If we iron out a couple things and become better as a unit, I believe we can make a playoff push.”

“There’s always little things to clean up and we’ll tighten those things up in the film room, then on field. I don’t like to dwell on it too much as we’re always preaching to focus on the next play and not let the negative affect how we carry ourselves, but we’re going to take the loss as an opportunity to grow. We’ll figure out the nitty gritty in the film room. Honestly, I see confidence across the board already. They know they’re great athletes, they believe in our plan and trust the coaches, and we have athletes that just want to get better to win games. Saying that, it’s very important to boost their confidence early so they can play at 100% of their capacity. We want them flying around and not thinking too much, and I think this first game tested our abilities in a good way. They can look back at this game and see that Vaughan had a ton of great athletes, but little mistakes cost us the game, not our ability,” added coach Wheten.

Despite the loss, the Sabercats showed strong compete level and resilience in their first game at the AAA level, giving plenty of positives for Wheten and his coaching staff to build on moving forward.

The Sabercats will now prepare for another tough road matchup as they travel to the nation’s capital to face the Myers Riders at Gee-Gees Field in Ottawa, Ontario on Sunday, May 24th. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
