KORAH’S DEFENSE AND LAFRANCE’S LATE GAME HEROICS PUSH THE COLTS PAST THE KNIGHTS IN THE SR. GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

SR. GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

KORAH COLTS VS. ST. MARY’S KNIGHTS

Lucy Lafrance hit a dagger 3 late, and the Korah defense smothered the St. Mary’s offense for most of the game as the Colts beat the Knights 37-30 in last night’s Championship Game held at Superior Heights.

The game was touted as a stellar defensive matchup, and both teams didn’t disappoint.  Possession after possession, it was a blocked shot, followed by a steal, followed by a player taking a charge.

In the end, it was Colts who found some offense led by their shooting star.  With the score 27-24 with 3:50 left to go in the game, Lafrance flashed to the middle of St. Mary’s 2-3 Zone from the left 45 and calmly hit a jumper just inside the foul line to give them a 29-24 advantage.  On the very next Colt’s possession, Delaney Elliott found Lafrance at the right 45, and again she calmly nailed the biggest shot of the basketball game, as her three-point shot gave the Colts an 8-point lead.  That lead was too much for the Knights and the Colts held on for the 7 point victory.  Lucy led her team with 13 points.  Elliott finished the game with 8 points, while teammate Ava Engel rounded out the scoring with 6.

The Knights deserve a ton of credit for how hard they fought all game without their best player.  Ashlyn Noble was out with an ankle injury and was trying to will her team from the bench.  It was Kierra Kent and Ella Zachary stepping up big in her absence.  Kent and Zachary scored 26 of their team’s 30 points as they scored 13 points apiece.

These two teams are not done facing each other however as both teams have qualified for the N.O.S.S.A. AAA/AA Championships held here in Sault Ste. Marie next weekend.

JR. GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

KORAH COLTS VS. ST. MARY’S KNIGHTS

In the Jr. Championship Game, it was all St. Mary’s Knights from start to finish as they defeated the Korah Colts 32-13.
Kylah Viotto had a huge game for the Knights and lead all scorers with a game-high 16 points.  Sienna Magli had 9 points for the winners, while Abi Jaremko and Sophia Fata chipped in with 4 points each.
It was the Knights’s team defense that was the story in this one, as they forced numerous turnovers and contested every shot.  The Knight’s 2-3 Zone defense kept the Colt’s offense in check the entire first half en route to a 19-5 halftime score.  The Colts would battle hard in the second half but it wasn’t enough to beat the undefeated Knights.
Leading the way for the Colts was Lila Jarrett with 4 points.  Emily Bateman and Addie Tremblay each scored 3.
The season isn’t over for either one of these teams as they will play in the N.O.S.S.A. AAA/AA Championships held here in Sault Ste. Marie next weekend.
