The first place (14 – 0) St Mary’s Knights took to the ice at the John Rhodes Centre on Monday, February 6th against the third place (2-11) Superior Heights Steelhawks after defeating the Korah Colts 7 – 5 on Sunday, February 5th in Sault Ste Marie High School Hockey League action.
Scoring the first goal of the Monday’s contest, Steelhawk Connor Ouimette finds the back of Knight goaltender Jaxon Alexander at 3:07 of the first with Clark Parker and Owen Case notching the helpers on Ouimette’s powerplay marker. Jack McPherson fires the tying goal for St Mary’s at the 10:47 mark of the second behind Superior Heights netminder Tristan Tranberg to even the game 1 – 1. Koen Kurylo and Gabe Zimbaro drew the contributors on McPherson’s tying goal. 3:36 into the third, Knight blueliner Cole Masse gives St Mary’s a 2 – 1 lead unassisted. With only three seconds remaining in the contest, Steelhawk Dylan Murphy finds the back of Alexander’s net to send the game into overtime. Owen Case added the assist on Murphy’s tying goal. Nik Vecchio gives St Mary’s a 3 – 2 overtime win with an unassisted goal behind Tranberg with 45 seconds left in the extra period.
Tuesday, February 7th is the next action in high school hockey with the Steelhawks facing the Korah Colts in a 3:30 p.m start at the McMeeken Arena while the Knights meet the Colts on Wednesday, February 8th at the John Rhodes Centre for a 3:30 p.m puck drop.
