On Saturday, February 4th, the Algoma Thunderbirds hosted Ontario Tech. This game was also a dedicated Black History Month event from Algoma Athletics. As part of the event, the proceeds will be donated to the AU ACCANO Scholarship.
The women’s team led a strong first half of the game. With OT only leading by 2 points after the first quarter, AU answered back in the second, scoring 11 points over OT. The third quarter remained close, but Ontario Tech managed to step up their game and took the win. Final score of the game was 61-53, one of Algoma U WBB team’s closer games. Top scorers of the game were Bethany Balaktsis and Karly Fracalanza with 15 points each. Balaktsis also had 11 rebounds during the game.
The men’s team looked like it was going to be a close call. With OT taking the lead by 2 points in the first quarter, we were excited to see such a close game. By half, AU led by 1 point. OT bounced back in the third quarter, managing to score 4 points over AU in the quarter. At this point, it seemed like it could have been anyone’s game. However, Algoma managed to step it up in the fourth quarter, scoring 14 points over Ontario Tech. The team added another win to their season, ending with a final score of 79-68. Top scorers of the game were Devin Miron and Roman Niro with 15 points each. Miron also had 14 rebounds during the game.
