On Saturday, September 9th, the St Mary’s Knights took to the field at Superior Heights Field to meet the Superior Heights in junior and senior high school football action to open the Sault Ste Marie high school football season.
In the opening game of senior high school football 2023 season, the Superior Heights Steelhawks fell to the St Mary’s Knights in a 35 – 0 shutout loss. Quarterback Matti Tucker lead to offense in the Knights win with 334 yards in passing with 14 completions on 20 attempts for St Mary’s. Tucker found Nate Carter with nine passes for the Knights while Jack McPherson made four catches for a total of 140 yards for St Mary’s. Anthony Blonda rushed for 43 yards on seven carries. In the defensive side, Colin Meade, Noah Boyer, and Blayre Boudreau finished the win with three tackles a piece for the Knights. Gavin Nye led the Steelhawks on defense with 5.5 tackles in the loss. Grade eleven Steelhawk quarterback Daikaden Gauthier found Cole Cond for two passes for a total of 36 yards for Superior Heights. Gauthier threw for a total of 55 yards with six passes to open the 2023 senior season.
The Knights will take their 1 – 0 senior record into Thursday, September 14th contest against the Korah Colts at 7:30 p.m at Superior Heights Field with the Steelhawks face the White Pines Wolverines on Friday, September 15th in a 7:30 p.m kickoff. The Knights needed the extra touchdown to earn their win of the 2023 Sault Ste Marie High School junior football season with a 21 – 14 win over the Steelhawks to head into week two of the season with a 1 – 0 record while Superior Heights enter week two with a 0 – 1 record after the loss to the Knights in week one junior action.
The Steelhawks will face the meet the White Pines Wolverines on Friday, September 15th along with the Knights facing the Korah Colts take on the Knights on Thursday, September 14th.
