Knights Open 2023/24 High School Season with a Win Over Steelhawks

On Sunday, November 5th, the St Mary’s Knights took to the ice at the John Rhodes Centre to face the Superior Heights Steelhawks to open the 2023 – 2024 Sault Ste Marie High School Hockey League contest.

At 2:52 of the opening period from just inside the right blueline, Steelhawk Owen Case fires a wrist shot over Knights goaltender Liam Dubois’ catcher to give Superior Heights a 1 – 0 lead. Ryder Magee added the lone assist on Cases first of the season. Brayden Luzzi lifts the tying goal over Superior Height netminder Tyler Greco’s blocker to even the game 1 – 1 at 4:26 of the second period. Harley Wardell notched the helper on Luzzi’s first of the season. Daniel Guzzo skates down the right side of the ice to sink the Knights go-ahead goal at 2:13 of the period to give St Mary’s a 2 – 1 lead. Christian Sartor added the contributor on Guzzo’s first of the season. With 30.7 seconds remaining in the second, Lucas Green catches a cross crease pass from Nick Kelly to slide the Knights third under Greco’s left pad to increase St Mary’s lead to 3 – 1. Unassisted Anthony Blonda rifles wrist shot from the right blueline to find the back of the Steelhawks net through traffic to give the Knights a 4 – 1 lead.

St Mary’s coach Josh Dunn told Saultsports that “I thought we were solid and it was a complete team effort. As a staff were happy with the overall performance and to come away with the two points.”

“We had a bit of a slow start as some of the kids had to adjust to the pace and playing together. St. Mary’s has a very quick team. Feel our play and discipline improved throughout the game and the third period was probably our best. Great for the kids to get a game in and see what we can work on going forward,” said Steelhawk coach Jamie Greco.

Superior Heights next opponent will be the Korah Colts on September 10th in a 7:30 puck drop at the John Rhodes Centre wheile the Knights take on the Colts on November 19th at 7:00 p.m with a start of 7:00 p.m at the John Rhodes Centre.
