After a busy deadline on Monday, January 10th with Jacob Holmes and Marc Bourdeau heading to the Sudbury Wolves and numerous drafts picks to the Peterborough Petes and Mississauga Steelheads for newly acquired Jack Thompson, Keegan McMullen, and Ty Anselmini, the Soo Greyhounds hit the ice in Sault Ste Marie on Saturday, January 15th for game one of the weekend against the visiting Owen Sound Attack in Ontario Hockey League action.
With a backhand pass from Cole MacKay in the left corner at 8:33 of the opening period and Greyhounds shorthanded, Tanner Dickinson finds the five hole of Owen Sound goaltender Nick Chenard to give the Soo a 1 – 0 lead with Thompson adding the second assits on Dickinson’s 14th of the season. Ryan O’Rourke fires his fourth of the season from the right blueline through traffic to find the back of the Attack net over Chenard’s catcher to bring the lead to 2 – 0 at 14:55 of the first. Dickinson and Tye Kartye had the helpers on O’Rourke’s powerplay goal. Logan Lesage fires a wrist shot over Greyhound netminder Tucker Tynan’s shoulder to pull the Attack within one at 11:31 of the second. Stepan Machacek and Cal Uens notched the helpers on Lesage’s fourth of the season. All alone in the right faceoff cirlce, Robert Calisti fires a wrist shot over Chenard’s blocker to give the Soo a two goal lead at 12:05 with Dickinson and O’Rourke registering the contributors on Calisti’s 12th of the season.
At 16:23 of the period, Sault Ste Marie native Nick Porco closes the gap to one for Owen Sound with his tenth of the season with the Attack. Cedrick Guindon had the lone assists on Porco’s goal. With seven seconds remaining in the period, Rory Kerins rifles a snapshot from the left faceoff circle on a Soo powerplay to send the Greyhounds into the second intermission up 4 – 2. O’Rourke and Tyler Savard set up Kerins’ 20th of the season. 1:43 into the final period, newly acquired Keegan McMullen sinks his fifth of the season and first in a Greyhound jersey to give the Soo a 5 – 2 win over the visiting Attack. Calisti and Thompson added the assists on McMullen’s goal. Owen Sound’s Nick Chenard stopped 33 of 38 shots in the loss while Greyhound Tucker Tynan turned away 13 of 15 shots in Saturday’s win over the Attack.
The Attack and Greyhounds are back in action on Sunday, January 16th in a 2:07 p.m afternoon matinee in Sault Ste Marie.
