After a 5 – 2 win to open the weekend in Sault Ste Marie on Saturday, January 15th over the visiting Owen Sound Attack, the Soo Greyhounds hit the ice for the second game of the back to back series with an afternoon matinee on Sunday, January 16th against the Attack.
With a two on one with Rory Kerins, veteran Greyhound forward Cole MacKay fires a wrist shot from the left faceoff circle to find the back of Attack goaltender Nick Chenard’s left shoulder to give the Soo a 1 – 0 lead at 7:06 of the first. Kerins and Robert Calisti added the helpers on MacKay’s 13th of the season. After a five minute official review and scrum in front of Chenard’s net being knocked off, Rory Kerins was awarded his 21st goal of the season on a Greyhound powerplay at 11:23 with MacKay and Tanner Dickinson drawing the contributors on Kerins’ powerplay goal. With the Soo shorthanded and a two on one, Tye Kartye rifles an unassisted wrist shot over Chenard’s catcher to send the Greyhounds into the first intermission up 3 – 0 at the 18:34 mark of the period.
Three Greyhound rookies combine on the Soo’s fourth of the game with Justin Cloutier flying up the left boards to find the back of Chenard’s net over the Owen Sound Attack’s left shoulder in the top corner to increase the lead to 4 – 0. Bryce McConnell Barker and Connor Toms added the assists on Cloutier’s fifth of the season. With 1:56 remaining the second period, Dickinson sinks the lone goal of the period with a wrist shot his 15th of the season behind Attack goaltender Corbin Votary on a Soo powerplay. Kerins and Ryan O’Rourke setup Dickinson’s powerplay goal to bring the lead to 5 – 0. Kerins crosses the centre of the blueline to register his fourth point of the game and second straight goal for the Greyhounds with a snapshot into the back of Owen Sound’s net at 14:33 with a lone helper from Kirill Kudryavtsev. Sault Ste Marie’s Nick Porco scores his 11th of the season for the lone goal for the Attack at 14:52 behind Soo rookie netminder Samuel Ivanov. Cedricson Okitundu and Deni Goure had the contributors on Porco’s goal. Owen Sound goaltenders Nick Chenard and Corbin Votary combined to stop 30 of 36 goals while Samuel Ivanov turned away 23 of 24 shots for Ivanov’s 14th win of the 2021 – 2022 season.
Next action for the Greyhounds will be a three game road trip that begins on January 20th in Windsor against the Spitfires in a 7:30 p.m puck drop.
