U16 Greyhounds Dominate in Physical Weekend and Sweep Visiting Flyers

In Sault Ste Marie, Ontario over the November 29th and 30th weekend, the ninth place Soo U16 Greyhounds hosted the eighth place Kapuskasing Flyers in GNU18HL action at the John Rhodes Centre.

At the John Rhodes Community Centre, in game one of the weekend on Saturday evening, the Soo U16 Greyhounds and Kapuskasing Flyers delivered an action-packed matchup filled with momentum swings, special-teams battles, and standout individual performances. When the dust settled, the Greyhounds skated away with a well-earned victory, powered by timely scoring and depth throughout the lineup.

The Flyers opened the scoring at 3:05 of the first period on a powerplay marker from Connor McNabb, his fourth of the season, with assists going to Niko Lessard and Dustin Niquet. The Greyhounds responded just under three minutes later when Gage Guzzo buried his fifth of the campaign at 5:54, finishing a setup from Benjamin McKinlay and Nicholas Patience to even the score 1–1 heading into the break.

The second period saw the Soo take control. At 1:38, Bailey Fitzpatrick put the Greyhounds ahead with his second of the season, converting a feed from Guzzo and Preston Gioia. The lead grew to 3–1 when Alexander Priem struck at 6:50, recording his third goal of the year off a pass from Reegan Dezordo. Kapuskasing pushed back on the man advantage at 15:11, with McNabb netting his second of the game and fifth of the season, again assisted by Lessard and Niquet. But the Greyhounds answered immediately—just seven seconds later—when Benjamin McKinlay scored his first of the season at 15:18, with helpers from Simon McLean and Logan Watson. The Flyers narrowed the gap once more at 17:37 as McNabb completed the hat trick with his sixth of the campaign, set up by Lessard and Tanner Moreau, sending the game to the third with the Soo holding a 4–3 lead.

In the final frame, the Greyhounds solidified their edge. At 4:03, Bryson Palahnuk notched his fourth of the season, finishing a play created by Rocco Dos Reis and Ethan Farquharson to extend the Soo lead. With time winding down, Priem sealed the win with his second goal of the game and fourth of the season, scoring unassisted at 19:09 to cap off a strong team performance.

Fueled by balanced scoring and key contributions across the roster, the Soo U16 Greyhounds earned a statement victory in a fast-paced and competitive matchup against the Kapuskasing Flyers.

In a tough, hard-checking Sunday morning showdown, the Soo U16 Greyhounds returned to the ice for their second game of the weekend and delivered a commanding performance from start to finish. Capitalizing on special teams, speed, and relentless pressure, the Greyhounds controlled the pace early and never looked back on their way to a decisive victory over the Kapuskasing Flyers.

The Greyhounds wasted no time setting the tone. Just 45 seconds into the first period, David Francella opened the scoring on the powerplay with his second of the season, finishing a play started by Logan Watson and Rocco Dos Reis. The Soo continued to roll at 4:03 when Gage Guzzo buried his sixth of the year, with assists from Benjamin McKinlay and Dos Reis. The lead grew again at 8:03 as McKinlay struck for his second of the season, converting a setup from Bryson Palahnuk and Alexander Priem. McKinlay wasn’t done—at 16:22, he added his second of the period and third of the year, capitalizing on a feed from Guzzo and Ethan Cress to give the Greyhounds a dominant 4–0 lead after 20 minutes.

The second period brought more of the same from the Soo. Just 31 seconds in, Reegan Dezordo scored on the powerplay, netting his fourth of the season off assists from McKinlay and Watson. At 5:46, Guzzo recorded his seventh of the year, once again set up by the ever-active Dos Reis. The Greyhounds continued to pour it on at 11:50 when McKinlay completed a hat trick—his fourth of the season—scoring unassisted to extend the lead to 7–0 through two periods.

Kapuskasing broke the shutout just 49 seconds into the third period, with Paul Harris notching his sixth of the season from Khamdyn Ross. But the Greyhounds responded quickly and decisively. At 4:37, Francella scored his second of the game and third of the season, with Dos Reis and Ethan Farquharson picking up assists on the play to restore the Soo’s commanding edge.

From the opening faceoff to the final buzzer, the Greyhounds showcased depth, discipline, and determination across the roster. With standout performances from McKinlay, Francella, Guzzo, and Dos Reis, the Soo capped off their weekend with a statement win in a physical, emotionally charged matchup.
