The Soo Greyhounds strengthened their defensive core on Friday night by selecting Jaden Licastro of Vaughan, Ontario with the twelfth overall pick in the first round of the 2026 OHL Priority Selection Draft in Kingston, Ontario.
The 16-year-old defenseman arrives in Sault Ste. Marie following an impressive season with the Toronto Marlboros AAA program, where he established himself as one of the top blueliners available in this year’s draft class.
Standing 6-foot-1 and weighing 186 pounds, Licastro appeared in 32 games during the 2025-26 season, recording 11 goals and 19 assists for 30 points while adding just six penalty minutes. His offensive production from the back end, combined with his responsible defensive play, made him one of the most sought-after defensemen in the province.
Licastro also showcased his abilities on a bigger stage at the 2026 OHL Cup Showcase, collecting two assists in four games while competing against the top talent from across Ontario.
Known as a captain and leader on and off the ice, Licastro’s game is highlighted by his smooth skating ability, strong puck-moving skills, and effectiveness in all three zones. He consistently elevates his play throughout games and has earned a reputation as a defenseman capable of contributing offensively while remaining dependable in his own end.
Following his selection by the Greyhounds, Licastro reflected on the milestone moment.
“It’s a dream that has come true,” said Licastro. “I play with my size, skate with my size, and I’m excited for the opportunity ahead.”
With the 12th overall selection, the Soo Greyhounds have secured one of the premier defensemen from the 2026 draft class and a player expected to make an impact at the OHL level for years to come.
