Former Thunderbirds and Current Greyhound Blueliner Andrew Gibson Drafted 42nd Overall by the Detroit Red Wings

Soo Greyhound blueliner Andrew Gibson was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in Nashville at the 2023 National Hockey League Draft with the 42nd selection overall in the second round.

The 6’3” and 198 lbs defenseman played in 45 regular season games with the Ontario Hockey League Soo Greyhounds where the 18 year old LaSalle, Ontario native had seven goals and 14 assists in 2022 – 2023 regular season while tallying a total of 30 minutes in penalties. Gibson was drafted in the 2021 OHL Priority Selection Draft in the fourth round and the 67th overall pick by the Greyhounds. Gibson played for the Soo Thunderbirds in Sault Ste Marie were as a 17 year old, Andrew patrolled the blueline in 40 regular season games in 2021 – 2022. In 40 games, Gibson scored 21 goals and contributed on 30 along with spending 51 minutes in the penalty box.

In 15 post season games with the Thunderbirds, the LaSalle, Ontario native found the net for three goals and added eight assists helping the Soo to a Copeland McNamara Cup title and a trip to the 2023 National Championships. Gibson also played six regular season games in 2021 – 2022 with the Greyhounds. In his first season as a junior ‘A’ hockey defenseman, Andrew lead all league blueliners in goals and assists averaging 1.28 points per game as well as five game winning goals and named the 2022 league best defenseman.
