In Nashville, Tennessee on Thursday, June 29th, Sault Ste Marie’s Cooper Foster was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the sixth round with the 174th overall selection.
The 18 year old forward with the Ottawa 67’s played 63 regular season games in the nation’s capital where the Sault Ste Marie native scored 19 goals and added 17 assists. The 5’11 and 175 lbs forward tallied 38 minutes in penalties in 2022 – 2023. As a 17 year old during the 2021 – 2022 season, Foster played for the Soo Thunderbirds where he sank 18 goals and contributed 42 to total 60 points as a junior ‘A’ rookie.
Foster told Saultsports that “it’s truly and honour and a dream come true for me, they’re such a great organization and have had so many players I grew up idolizing play for Pittsburgh.”
At the 2022 Centennial Cup national championships with his hometown Thunderbirds Foster added two assists in four games. The Sault Ste Marie forward also saw action in the Ontario Hockey League in 2021 – 2022 with 14 appearances with the 67’s where the 17 year old had four contributors in Ottawa.
