Over the September 28th and 29th weekend in Sault Ste Marie, the Sault College Cougars hosted the Lambton Lions and Centennial Colts in two doubleheaders at IDA Park.
In game one of the weekend, Sault College couldn’t keep up with Lambton and fell 12-1 on Saturday at IDA Park.
The Lions got on the board in the top of the second inning after Tyler Gould grounded out, and Logan Buntrock singled, each scoring one run.
Lambton scored six runs on three hits in the top of the third inning. Noah Lester grounded out, scoring two runs, AJ Edwards singled, scoring one run, and Buntrock homered to left field, scoring three runs.
Kale Murray earned the win for the Lions. The pitcher gave up two hits and one run over five innings, striking out six and walking seven. Bryce Blixit took the loss for the Cougars. The hurler went two and two-thirds innings, giving up six runs on two hits, striking out three and walking seven.
Aiden Russel and Dylan Rudge were a force together in the lineup, as they each collected one hit for Sault College while hitting back-to-back. Michael Starzomski led the team with one run batted in. Russel paced the Cougars with two walks. Overall, the team had patience at the plate, accumulating seven walks for the game.
Buntrock went 2-for-2 at the plate and led the team with four runs batted in. Luke Murray went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Lambton in hits. The Lions had a strong eye at the plate, accumulating nine walks for the game. Murray, Buntrock, and Jack Helps led the team with two free passes each. The Lions were sure-handed in the field and didn’t commit a single error. Murray had the most chances in the field with six.
In game two of the doubleheader on Saturday afternoon the Lions first inning the Lambton past Sault College.
The Lions scored 10 runs in the first inning, which helped them defeat the Cougars 17-0 on Saturday at IDA Park.
Lambton jumped out to the lead in the top of the first inning after Luke Murray singled, scoring one run, Brady Pepper doubled, scoring three runs, Noah Lester singled, scoring one run, Logan Buntrock doubled, scoring two runs, Murray singled, scoring one run, and an error scored two runs.
The Lions added to their early lead in the top of the third inning when Wes Brooks homered to right field, scoring two runs, and Tyler Kerby singled, scoring one run.
Aidan MacDonald earned the win for Lambton. The right-handed pitcher gave up one hit and zero runs over four innings, striking out four and walking two. Gabriel Tremblay pitched three innings in relief for Sault College. The pitcher gave up six hits and four runs (zero earned) while, striking out one and walking none. Owen Daynard took the loss for the Cougars. The righty went two innings, surrendering 13 runs (six earned) on eight hits, striking out none and walking two.
Jayden Valle led Sault College with one hit in two at bats.
Lambton amassed 14 hits in the game. Brooks went 3-for-4 at the plate and led the team with four runs batted in. Murray and Buntrock each collected multiple hits for the Lions. Lambton didn’t commit a single error in the field. Charlie Brander had the most chances in the field with five.
On Sunday afternoon in game three of the weekend on September 29th the impressive pitching of the Cougars beat the Centennial Colts. Both teams were strong on the bump on Sunday, but Sault College defeated the Colts 3-2. Carter Gallivan started the game for Sault College and recorded 19 outs.
A ground out by Connor Bruzas put the Cougars on the board in the bottom of the second. Ricardo Rodriguez singled, which helped the Colts tie the game at one in the top of the fifth. A single by Jayden Valle gave Sault College the lead, 3-1, in the bottom of the fifth.
Gallivan earned the win for the Cougars. The starting pitcher gave up five hits and two runs over six and one-third innings, striking out four and walking five. Rodriguez took the loss for Centennial. The pitcher went three innings, giving up two runs on one hit, striking out four and walking three. Liam Oates started the game for the Colts. The righty surrendered three hits and one run over three innings, striking out two and walking two. Cole Masse collected the save.
Valle provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led Sault College with two runs batted in. The cleanup hitter went 1-for-2 on the day. Valle, Travis Rainey, Michael Starzomski, and Ben Weatherbee each collected one hit for the Cougars. Sault College ran wild on the base paths, amassing three stolen bases for the game. The Cougars turned one double play in the game. Riley Briggs and Rodriguez each drove in one run for Centennial. Oates stole two bases. The Colts stole three bases in the game.
In the final game of the weekend at home in Sault Ste Marie, Sault College Cougars fell after strong showing by Centennial. Sault College had trouble keeping up with the Colts in a 16-0 loss on Sunday at IDA Park. A sacrifice fly by Liam Oates put Centennial on the board in the top of the first.
The Colts scored five runs on four hits in the top of the second inning. Shoya Hase singled, scoring two runs, Owen Nichols hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run, Riley Briggs grounded out, scoring one run, and Oates singled, scoring one run. Centennial added to their early lead in the top of the third inning after Ricardo Rodriguez doubled, Hase singled, Cameron James hit into a fielder’s choice, Briggs singled, and Stec walked, each scoring one run.
Mitch Pattison earned the win for the Colts. The pitcher allowed two hits and zero runs over four innings, striking out five and walking three. Dylan Szymoniak took the loss for Sault College. The starter went two and one-third innings, giving up 11 runs (eight earned) on nine hits, striking out none and walking three. Aiden Russel, Jayden Valle, and Travis Rainey each collected one hit for Sault College.
Centennial tallied 14 hits in the game. Rodriguez, the Colt’s number seven hitter, led the team with three hits in three at-bats. Briggs, Nichols, Oates, James, Hase, and Rodriguez each drove in two runs for Centennial. Takehito Mori collected two hits for the Colts in three at bats. Stec led Centennial with two walks. Overall, the team had a strong eye at the plate, amassing seven walks for the game. Briggs stole two bases. The Colts turned one double play in the game.
Sault College will travel to Ajax, Ontario to face the Seneca Sting on Saturday, October 5th for a doubleheader followed by another doubleheader on Sunday, October 6th to take on the George Brown Huskies.
