Cougars Fall to the Huskies and Sting on the Road to Open October 2024

Over the Saturday, October 5th and Sunday, October 6th weekend, the Sault College Cougars hit the road for four games where they would take on the Seneca Sting and George Brown Huskies in OCAA men’s baseball action.

Saturday’s game against the Sting was a heartbreaker for the Cougars, as they lost the lead late in a 4-3 defeat. Seneca were down 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning when Keishon Williams singled, scoring two runs.

Sault College got on the board in the second inning after one run scored on a balk.

The Sting took the lead, 4-3, in the bottom of the sixth thanks to singles by Graham Henry, and Williams.

Tyson Mercer earned the win for Seneca Sting. The hurler gave up six hits and three runs (zero earned) over seven innings, striking out eight and walking one. Carter Gallivan took the loss for Sault College. The starting pitcher went six innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on nine hits, striking out four and walking one.

Travis Rainey provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led the Cougars with two runs batted in. The 3-hole hitter went 1-for-4 on the day. Bryce Blixit, Sault College number nine hitter, led the team with two hits in three at-bats.

The Sting accumulated nine hits in the game. Ishaan Persaud and AJ Rowe were a force together in the lineup, as they each collected two hits for Seneca while hitting back-to-back. Williams provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led Seneca Sting with two runs batted in. The infielder went 1-for-3 on the day.

Next up for Sault College Cougars in the doubleheader was game two of the day versus the Sting on Saturday.

A walk-off left Sault College on the wrong end of a 10-9 defeat to Seneca on Saturday. The game was tied at nine in the bottom of the seventh when Keishon Williams singled, scoring one run.

Sault College collected 11 hits and Seneca Sting had 13 in the high-scoring affair.

The Cougars opened the scoring in the first after Jayden Valle singled, scoring one run.

In the bottom of the first inning, Seneca Sting went back into the lead after Graham Henry lined out, Williams doubled, and Daylon Guan-Armit singled, each scoring one run. Sault College tied the game in the top of the seventh thanks to a single by Aiden Russel, and an error.

Henry earned the win for Seneca. The pitcher surrendered zero hits and zero runs over two-thirds of an inning, striking out one and walking none. Bryce Blixt led things off on the bump for the Cougars. The southpaw gave up five hits and three runs over two innings, striking out two and walking two. Cole Devine started the game for the Sting. The pitcher allowed eight hits and four runs over five innings, striking out two and walking one.

The Cougars collected 11 hits in the game. Valle provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led Sault College with three runs batted in. The right-handed hitter went 2-for-4 on the day. Valle, Connor Bruzas, and Ben Weatherbee each collected two hits for Sault College Cougars. Russel stole two bases. The Cougars ran wild on the base paths, collecting four stolen bases for the game.

Seneca Sting amassed 13 hits in the game. Williams drove the middle of the lineup, leading Seneca with three runs batted in. The shortstop went 3-for-4 on the day. Ishaan Persaud, AJ Rowe, and Henry each collected multiple hits for the Sting. Guan-Armit led Seneca Sting with two walks. Overall, the team had a strong eye at the plate, accumulating seven walks for the game. Seneca Sting ran wild on the base paths, amassing three stolen bases for the game.

In game three of the weekend, the Cougars traveled to face George Brown Huskies. Both teams were strong on the hill on Sunday, but George Brown was just a little bit stronger at the plate in their 3-1 victory over the Cougars. Owen Daynard started the game for Sault College Cougars and recorded 13 outs.

Sault College lost despite out-hitting the Huskies four to two. Jayden Valle, Carter Gallivan, Brooks Aylward, and Ben Weatherbee each collected one hit for the Cougars. A single by Weatherbee put Sault College on the board in the top of the fourth. The Huskies jumped into the lead in the bottom of the fifth when an error scored two runs, and Patrick Jannetta grounded out, scoring one run.

Ethan Robertson earned the win for George Brown. The righty surrendered four hits and one run over seven innings, striking out six and walking one. Cole Masse took the loss for Sault College. The hurler went one and two-thirds innings, giving up one run (zero earned) on one hit, striking out one and walking none. Daynard started the game for Sault College. The righty allowed one hit and two runs (zero earned) over four and one-third innings, striking out one and walking none.

Weatherbee went 1-for-3 at the plate and led the team with one run batted in.

Marcus Herback, the number eight hitter for George Brown, led the way with two runs batted in. Tyler Romandel and Connor Gentes each collected one hit for George Brown Huskies. The Huskies turned one double play in the game. George Brown were sure-handed in the field and didn’t commit a single error. Jannetta had the most chances in the field with seven.

In game four of the weekend and second of the day of the doubleheader, Sault College had trouble keeping up with George Brown in an 11-1 loss on Sunday. A single by Travis Rainey put Sault College on the board in the top of the first. The Huskies made the score 3-1 in the bottom of the second after Marcus Herback drew a walk, scoring one run, and Brendan Nolet singled, scoring two runs.

Finlay Butler earned the win for George Brown. The starting pitcher allowed three hits and one run (zero earned) over five and two-thirds innings, striking out six and walking two. Dylan Szymoniak took the loss for the Cougars. The starting pitcher went three innings, giving up five runs (two earned) on three hits, striking out none and walking one. Rainey led Sault College with one run batted in. The number three hitter went 2-for-3 on the day.

Lukas Richardson and Tyler Romandel each drove in two runs for the Huskies. Connor Gentes went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead George Brown in hits. Patrick Jannetta stole two bases. The Huskies stole six bases in the game. George Brown turned two double plays in the game.

Sault College will travel to Fanshawe Falcons for their next game on Saturday, October 12th for a doubleheader.
