Castillejo, Macmillan, Moreau, Orazietti, Silverthorn, and Walker Earn Gold at Fall NEOR Swim Meet in Sault Ste Marie

The Sault Surge Aquatic Team hosted the first North Eastern Ontario Regional swim meet of the 2024-25 season over the October 25th to 27th weekend at the John Rhodes Community Centre Pool.

64 local athletes represented the Sault Surge Aquatic Team combined to set 276 new personal best times. 16 swimmers raced to the wall fastest to win a combined 35 individual events. Sault Surge relay teams were also tops in the boys and girls 9-10 years old freestyle relays; the girls 11-12 freestyle relay had a dominant performance by leading the 2nd place team by 10 seconds.

Emma Vallee, 12, earned 4 individual event wins and was a part of the girls 11-12 freestyle relay with Elsa Mackay, Jenna Morin and Angela Thompson. Vallee’s time of 2minutes and 29.49 seconds matched the fastest time for that age group set 5 years ago. William Paranuik also set a Sault Surge Aquatic Team record with a time of 6minutes and 6.75 seconds while winning the boys 10/under 400m freestyle. Paranuik along with Bo Mackay, Finn Walker and Balin Evans to take the boys 10/under 200m freestyle relay. Evans led the way for the Surge win 5 individual event wins.

Also winning multiple individual events were Andrew Li winning 4 events. Asher Leask and William Paranuik swam to 3 individual gold medals.

Sophia Li, Adam Abasy, Blake Krivan and Brie Reid picked up 2 event wins each.

Margot Oak, Piper Scott, Quinn Hayes and Emma Slade combined to win the girls 9-10 200 Freestyle relay.

Also earning gold medals in individual events were: Alma Da Silva Castillejo, Sophie Macmillan, Eva Moreau, Alex Orazietti, Layla Silverthorn and Finn Walker.

The Sault Surge hosts the North Eastern Ontario Regional Championships in February 2025 and have 30 swimmers currently qualified to enter the prestigious meet.

The Surge will be busy in November as they will have groups competing at the Age Group International meet in Toronto, The Dom Bouchard invitational in North Bay and the NEOR Top Fish meet in Sudbury.
