British Columbia’s Sylvie Kostyshin to Join Algoma Women’s Soccer for Fall of 2025

On January 14, 2025, the Algoma Thunderbirds annouced that Sylvie Kostyshin to their women’s soccer team. A dynamic striker from Langley, British Columbia, Sylvie’s passion for the game and competitive nature make her a valuable addition to the Thunderbirds’ roster.

“Sylvie possesses a strong mentality and attacking playing style that fits into our values as a school and as a soccer program. We’re excited to have her on board,” says head coach, Maksym Kowal.

Sylvie began playing soccer at the age of seven and has gained extensive experience with teams such as LUSA, Coastal FC, Langley FC, and the Youth Nations Cup Team Ireland. She has competed in prestigious tournaments, including the Surf Cup, Desert Classic, EVAAS, SX Cup, Premier Showcase, Youth Nations Cup, BC Soccer Premier League Championships, BC Provincials, and the Baker Blast. Her accomplishments include being awarded the LUSA President’s Team Award in both 2022 and 2023, as well as the Athletic Leadership Award.

“I’m the type of player that is dedicated to my team,” Sylvie shared. “I enjoy being challenged and am extremely competitive. I want my team to win, but I also value the connections I have with my teammates and coaches.”

Sylvie’s leadership and commitment to excellence are matched by her academic success. A recipient of the French Award at Langley Secondary School, she will begin her studies in History at Algoma University this fall.

“I am looking for a smaller, more intimate school setting and a home-away-from-home experience,” Sylvie said of her decision to join Algoma University. “I like the smaller roster size of the soccer program compared to other schools as well.”
