Algoma Thunderbirds Name Jarryd Ling as their New Cross Country Running Program Coach

The Algoma University Thunderbirds are proud to announce the hiring of Jarryd Ling as the new head coach of the Cross Country Running program.

Jarryd is no stranger to the Thunderbirds community. Currently a valued member of our Athletic Therapy staff, Jarryd brings with him a strong background in both athletics and kinesiology. A 2021 graduate of Brock University’s Kinesiology program, Jarryd was a varsity Cross Country and Track and Field athlete with the Badgers, where he developed a deep love for long-distance running and team culture.

“We are thrilled to welcome Jarryd into this new role within Athletics,” said Jarret Miller, Manager of Athletics and Recreation. “His professional training as a Kinesiologist, combined with his competitive experience and leadership qualities, make him the ideal fit to help grow and develop our Cross Country Running programs.”

During the hiring process, Jarryd demonstrated a clear vision for how he plans to shape the program. “My coaches had a huge impact on me,” he shared. “They helped me grow not just as an athlete, but as a person. I want to pass that experience on to the next generation, building a team culture that feels like family.”

Jarryd’s coaching philosophy is centered around culture, clarity, and individual development. “It’s important to establish clear standards and expectations so the team is aligned,” he explained. “At the same time, every athlete is unique. My role is to identify their strengths and areas of growth and help them develop in a way that suits them best.”

Student-athletes can expect a coach who is passionate, supportive, and committed to excellence. “I keep a fun and focused atmosphere. I’ll always be honest, fair, and understanding—but I also set the bar high because I believe in our athletes,” he said.

Beyond the track or trail, Jarryd emphasizes the importance of balance. “Athletes’ well-being always comes first. If they’re not feeling good, everything else – school, sport, life – can suffer. I want to help them be proactive, organized, and well-rounded.”

Having already established strong relationships with Thunderbird athletes and staff in his role as an athletic therapist, Jarryd is eager to continue that journey from a new angle. “I’m excited to contribute in a different way and keep working with the incredible people in our athletics community,” he shared.

To the broader campus and community, Jarryd had this message: “I’m excited to start this new chapter with the Thunderbirds family. I look forward to seeing all of the community support as we continue to build something special together.”
