Zone One is a high-performance off-ice training program built specifically for competitive hockey players ages 8 to 16, delivering a pro-level development experience right here in Sault Ste. Marie. Designed to elevate young athletes beyond the basics, the program features two one-hour sessions per week over an eight-week period, focusing on the key elements that separate good players from great ones — speed, strength, and overall athleticism. With a structured, high-energy environment, Zone One is committed to helping players maximize their potential and translate their hard work directly onto the ice.
What sets Zone One apart is the elite experience behind the program. It is led by three former Sault Ste. Marie players who have developed through top-tier systems including the Soo Jr. Greyhounds, Soo Thunderbirds Junior “A” program, the OHL, U SPORTS, and professional leagues in Europe. Their combined backgrounds bring a unique blend of high-performance knowledge, real-world playing experience, and a deep understanding of what it takes to succeed at the next level.
Keegan Stevenson, a Sault Ste. Marie native, built an impressive career that saw him drafted by the Guelph Storm in the OHL and later attend the Vancouver Canucks NHL training camp. He also spent time with the Toronto Marlies in the AHL and finished his career at Acadia University, earning Rookie of the Year honours. With several years of coaching experience, including with the U18 AAA Soo Jr. Greyhounds, Stevenson now channels his expertise into developing the next generation of players.
Lucas Theriault combines high-level playing experience with academic excellence in kinesiology. After advancing to the Niagara IceDogs in the OHL, he went on to play four seasons at York University in U SPORTS while earning his degree. His training philosophy is rooted in sport science, focusing on building speed, confidence, and compete level. Currently continuing his path in education, Theriault is passionate about mentoring athletes both on and off the ice.
Steven Bellini brings a global perspective to Zone One. After earning Defenceman of the Year honours with the Soo Thunderbirds, he moved on to the BCHL’s Coquitlam Express, earning a Division I scholarship. He completed his junior career in the USHL before spending four years at Minnesota State University. Bellini later turned pro, competing overseas in Italy, and currently plays for HC Asiago in the AlpsHL. His professional experience and high-compete mindset help set the tone for every session.
The Zone One program focuses on four key development pillars. Speed and agility training includes track-based sprint work, ladder drills, and change-of-direction exercises designed to improve explosive movement. Strength and power sessions incorporate age-appropriate resistance training and plyometrics to build functional hockey strength. Athletes also develop a mental edge by training in a competitive, high-performance environment that builds discipline, confidence, and resilience. Throughout the program, progress is carefully tracked, with each athlete tested across all 16 sessions to ensure measurable improvement.
The 2026 summer schedule includes 16 total sessions running Tuesdays and Thursdays from July 7 to August 27, with training taking place at the John Rhodes Community Centre track. Session times will be announced, but the focus remains clear — delivering consistent, high-quality training in a professional environment.
Zone One represents more than just off-ice training. It’s an opportunity for young athletes in Sault Ste. Marie to train like pros, learn from experienced mentors, and take a serious step forward in their hockey development.
