Warriors Eliminate Thunderbird Men’s Chances for 2024 OUA Post Season

The final weekend of the 2024 soccer season! The Thunderbirds faced the Waterloo Warriors in back to back OUA games on home turf over the October 5th and 6th weekend in Sault Ste Marie.

At Sunday’s game, we had the opportunity to celebrate our three graduating players: Hiroki Wada, Darius Bailey, and Peter Alexandrakis. Your dedication to the men’s soccer program has been appreciated, and we wish you all the best in your future endeavours!

Women’s Game 1: Algoma 0 – 7 Waterloo

Sunday, October 6th
Women’s Game 2: Algoma 1 – 2 Waterloo
Men’s Game 2: Algoma 0 – 1 Waterloo

Women’s Game 1 Recap
Shots on goal for Algoma were seen by Ava Provenzano, Taya Shackleton, Martina Pucci, and Berlyn Killoran. Waterloo’s Naamani scored six goals over the Thunderbirds. Mixing things up a bit in this game, we saw Julia Mazzuca in net, who made an incredible nine saves throughout the game.

Men’s Game 1 Recap
In what was one of two very important games this season, the pressure was on for the men’s team to gain a couple points this weekend. Not even three minutes into the game, Theo Hampton scored the first goal of the game, assisted by Peter Alexandrakis. Starting the game on a high, the team continued to dig deep. By half time, we were left with a draw, not sure of what the final result would be come the second half. With Waterloo scoring at the start of the second, they ended the game with a win over the Thunderbirds. Joshua Bondoc had four saves during the game.

Women’s Game 2 Recap
An incredible game to end off the season for the Thunderbirds. Despite a loss, the Thunderbirds held their own and demonstrated tremendous resilience and grit. Taya Shackelton made a fantastic goal in the 85th minute that would tie the game until Waterloo’s final goal. Victoria Fernandes made an incredible 15 saves.

Men’s Game 2 Recap
The men ended their season with an extremely intense game. Goalkeeper Alexander Burt made three saves while Harrison Berger made two. We saw many SOG from the team, showing that they put in continuous effort throughout the whole game.
