Voodoos Stay Perfect as Baharie and Boyes Decide Shootout Against Thunderbirds

Shootout goals from Aydin Baharie and Anthony Boyes proved to be the deciders as the Powassan Voodoos went on to edge the Soo Thunderbirds 3-2 Friday, October 2nd in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at the Powassan Sportsplex.

Scoring for a fourth straight game to begin the season, Caleb Dawson put the Voodoos in flight 13 minutes into the contest.

On the marker, Owen Smith sent him in alone on a close play at the blueline that was deemed to be onside, which allowed him to dart down the right wing and wire a shot past the blocker of Thunderbirds’ netminder Cameron Boville.

Still 1-0 for the hosts into the second period, Sault Ste. Marie pulled even at 9:07 when defenceman Jaden van de Ven took a play put back to him at the point and back peddled along the blueline before sending a shot through a maze of bodies that went top shelf and beat Powassan starter Matthew Lyon.

Another goal off a face-off saw the Voodoos retake the lead when Aidan Duchesne muscled the puck across to Devran Brown that allowed to move into the left circle and wire an attempt by Boville.

Answering with another equalizer, the Soo tied it via the man advantage as Sean Gresko took a nifty between the legs back pass from Felix Sapay and proceeded to roof it on Lyon.

After a scoreless third period, the clubs went to extra time to try and determine a winner.

Skating three aside in OT, the teams did not score again to send it to extra shots.

After a miss by the Soo, Baharie made a nice move to his left and snapped in a quick snapshot on Bonville.

Following a Thunderbirds opportunity that rolled off a stick, Boyes secured the result by coming in very slowly prior to ripping in the decider into the left corner to end it.

With the win, the Voodoos improve to 4-0-0-0 on the campaign while the Soo slip to 6-2-0-1.
