The Korah Colts turned in a dominant defensive performance under the lights Friday night, October 2, at Superior Heights Field, blanking the St. Mary’s Knights 28-0 in Sault Ste. Marie Senior High School Football action.

Korah wasted little time getting on the scoreboard.

Just 66 seconds into the opening quarter, Colts defensive player Logan LaJunen capitalized on a fumble by St. Mary’s quarterback Alex Hayes, scooping up the loose ball and racing into the end zone for a defensive touchdown. The major gave Korah an early 6-0 advantage.

The Colts continued to build their lead midway through the opening quarter. At the 8:26 mark, Payton Melchiorre found the end zone for Korah’s second major of the night. AJ Coccimiglio added the extra point, extending the Colts’ advantage to 13-0.

Korah added another point at 4:51 of the first quarter when a Coccimiglio field-goal attempt came up short, resulting in a rouge and making it 14-0.

Melchiorre was back in the end zone again with 2:46 remaining in the opening quarter. The Korah running back scored his second touchdown of the game on the ground, and Coccimiglio’s successful conversion pushed the Colts ahead 21-0.

With Korah holding a commanding three-touchdown lead after the opening quarter, the Colts’ defence continued to keep the Knights off the scoreboard throughout the remainder of the contest.

St. Mary’s was unable to find an answer offensively as Korah protected its lead and continued to control the game on both sides of the ball.

The Colts added their final major at 8:35 of the fourth quarter when quarterback Brett Koski connected on a touchdown pass. Coccimiglio added the extra point, completing the scoring and giving Korah a convincing 28-0 victory.

The shutout was a complete team effort for the Colts, with LaJunen’s early defensive touchdown setting the tone and Melchiorre providing a major spark on the ground with two first-quarter touchdowns.

For St. Mary’s, the Knights will look to regroup as they prepare for their next senior contest against the Superior Heights Steelhawks on October 9 at Superior Heights Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Korah will be back in action sooner, taking on the White Pines Wolverines on October 8. That game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. kickoff.

With the senior high school football season moving toward its final stretch, every game becomes increasingly important, and the Colts will look to carry the momentum from Friday night’s shutout into their matchup with White Pines.
