Knights Capitalize on Turnovers and Big Plays in Junior Win Over Colts

The Korah Colts and St. Mary’s Knights met Friday, October 2, at Superior Heights Field for a Sault Ste. Marie High School Junior Football matchup that saw the Knights overcome an early Korah lead to secure a 37-19 victory.

Korah opened the scoring on its first offensive possession when quarterback Davian Clarke broke free for a 58-yard touchdown run. Finnley Aho added the extra point at 10:53 of the opening quarter to give the Colts an early 7-0 advantage.

St. Mary’s answered later in the opening quarter in dramatic fashion. From just outside the Korah end zone, Deegan Desjardin blocked a kick and recovered the loose ball in the Colts’ end zone for a Knights major. Tyler Diluzio converted the extra point to even the game at 7-7.

The Knights then took their first lead with just 78 seconds remaining in the first half. St. Mary’s Daniel Fraser intercepted a pass from Clarke at the Korah 35-yard line and returned the turnover for a touchdown. Diluzio once again converted, giving the Knights a 14-7 lead heading into halftime.

St. Mary’s added to its advantage early in the third quarter when Korah conceded a safety with 10:58 remaining in the quarter, extending the Knights’ lead to 16-7.

The Knights continued to build momentum at 5:58 of the third quarter when Bobby Real carried the ball seven yards into the end zone. Diluzio’s successful conversion made it 23-7 for St. Mary’s.

Korah responded with a touchdown of its own at the 2:44 mark of the third quarter. Clarke broke through the Knights’ defensive line from two yards out for his second rushing touchdown of the game, bringing the Colts within 10 points at 23-13.

St. Mary’s answered again in the fourth quarter. At 9:25, Russell Pine powered his way through for a six-yard touchdown carry. Diluzio converted to make it 30-13.

The Knights added another major at 7:35 of the fourth quarter to extend their lead to 36-13 before Korah found the end zone one final time.

With 99 seconds remaining in the contest, Connor Williamson scored on a seven-yard touchdown run for the Colts, bringing the final score to 37-19 in favour of St. Mary’s.

Despite the loss, Korah received strong offensive contributions from Clarke, who accounted for two rushing touchdowns, while Williamson added another major late in the fourth quarter.

The Colts will now turn their attention to their next matchup against the White Pines Wolverines on October 8, with kickoff scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

The Knights will return to action on October 9, when they take on the Superior Heights Steelhawks in a 4:45 p.m kickoff.
