After shutting out the visiting Toronto Jr Argos 31 – 0 on July 13th in Sault Ste Marie, the Sault U16 Sabercats hit the turf at Superior Heights to open the 2024 OSFL post season with hosting the Brantford Bisons in U16 OSFL action on Saturday, July 20th.
At 2:16 of the opening quarter, Sabercat AJ Coccimiglio finds the uprights for a Sault 26 yard field goal to give the Sabercats a 3 – 0 lead. Sabercat quarterback Zayne Murdoch finds Drayden Brock in the Bisons endzone with a one yard pass to bring the hosts lead to 10 -0 after a Coccimiglio extra point at 6:29 of the first. Brantford conceded a safety for a Sault extra point to bring the lead to 12 – 0 for the Sabercats at 11:49 of the second quarter. Murdoch fires a three yard pass to Brock to increase the lead to 19 – 0 after a Coccimiglio extra point. Brantford’s Brady Dowling finds Colin Shaw with a one yard pass for Shaw to rush two yards for the Bisons only points after a Malichai Neptune extra point at 4:39 of the third quarter to bring the score to 19 – 7. With 52.5 remaining the third, Sabercat Coccimiglio scores the final points of the game with the extra point after Payton Melchiorre runs a Sault four yard touchdown to give the Sabercats a 26 – 7 win over the Bisons.
Sabercat coach Will Basawa told Saultsports that “today’s win was a result of our team’s hard work and dedication. We performed well, sticking to our game plan and utilizing our strengths effectively. As we look ahead to next week, our focus remains on maintaining this level of performance and preparing for our upcoming opponent at home. We’re aware of who we’ll be facing and are preparing accordingly.”
The Sabercats will now wait to see who they host at Superior Heights in a OSFL semi final on Saturday, July 27th, kickoff yet to be determined.
