Over the September 6th to 8th weekend, the Algoma Thunderbird women and men’s soccer program hit the highway for their first time of the 2024 OUA season with matches in London and Guelph to take on the Western Mustangs and Guelph Gryphons.
The Algoma Thunderbird women hit the highway for their first road trip of the 2024 OUA regular season on Friday, September 6th when they faced the Western Mustangs in London, Ontario. The women Thunderbirds opened the weekend with a tough road match, the college women’s soccer team fell 12-0 to their formidable opponents. Despite their best efforts and determination, the team struggled to break through the defense and find the back of the net.
On Sunday, September 8th in their second game of the road trip, the Thunderbirds were in a challenging road game that tested their resolve, the college women’s soccer team faced a tough opponent and ended up on the losing side of a 6-0 scoreline. Despite their best efforts, the team struggled to contain the relentless offense of their rivals, who capitalized on every opportunity. The final score, though lopsided, does not diminish the hard work and dedication of the players, who showed resilience in the face of adversity.
On the men’s side for Algoma in their first road game of the season On Friday, September 6th, the Thunderbird men’s soccer team faced a tough challenge and fell 0-2 to the Mustangs. Despite their efforts to gain momentum, the team struggled to find their rhythm on the away field, and the Mustangs capitalized on their opportunities with precise execution.
After a challenging 2-0 loss in their first game of the weekend against the Mustangs, the Thunderbirds demonstrated resilience and determination in their second match, securing a hard-fought 0-0 draw against the Gryphons on Sunday. September 8th. The team’s defense stood strong, effectively neutralizing the Gryphons’ attacking threats and showcasing their ability to adapt and regroup. The clean sheet and the stalwart performance highlight the Thunderbirds’ capacity to bounce back and maintain their composure under pressure.
The women and men’s Thunderbird soccer programs will be back on the road for stops in Windsor on September 13th followed by rounding out the weekend in St Catharines to face Brock. Game times for these games will be 6:15 p.m/8:15 p.m on Friday followed by 1:15 p.m/3:15 p.m on Sunday with the women starting OUA action on these dates.
