On Saturday, September 7th, the Sault College Cougars hosted the St Clairs Saints in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association men’s baseball action at IDA Park to open their 2024 collegiate baseball season with a doubleheader in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario.
In game one of the day, the Cougars had trouble keeping up with the Saints in a 7-0 loss on Saturday at IDA Park.
St. Clair opened the scoring in the top of the first thanks to two errors. The Saints first got on the board when an error scored one run.
A single by Andrew Langlois extended the Saints lead to 4-0 in the top of the third inning.
Brady Knelsen earned the win for St. Clair. The righty surrendered one hit and zero runs over seven innings, striking out 10 and walking none. Carter Gallivan took the loss for the Cougars. The right-handed pitcher went three innings, allowing four runs (zero earned) on one hit, striking out four and walking five.
Diego Martinez went 1-for-3 at the plate to lead Sault College in hits. The Cougars turned one double play in the game.
Colin Robinson provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led the Saints with two runs batted in. Jordan Miller, Mitch McCosh, Langlois, Henry Real, and Joshua Hudvagner each collected one hit for St. Clair. Hudvagner led the Saints with two walks. Overall, the team had a strong eye at the plate, amassing seven walks for the game.
In game two of the doubleheader on Saturday, September 7th in Sault Ste Marie, the Cougars couldn’t keep up with the Saints and fell 16-0 on Saturday at IDA Park.
The Saints got on the board in the top of the first inning after Harrison singled, Mitch McCosh singled, Joshua Hudvagner singled, and Cole Saros hit a sacrifice fly, each scoring one run.
St. Clair scored eight runs on eight hits in the top of the second inning. Harrison singled, scoring one run, Henry Real doubled, scoring two runs, Andrew Sleiman singled, scoring one run, Kanaan Gale singled, scoring three runs, and Harrison singled, scoring one run.
Brock Whitson earned the win for the Saints. The right-handed pitcher gave up one hit and zero runs over five innings, striking out eight and walking one. Owen Daynard took the loss for Sault College. The right-handed pitcher went one inning, allowing 11 runs (seven earned) on 10 hits, striking out one and walking one.
Connor Bruzas led the Cougars with one hit in one at bat.
St. Clair amassed 17 hits in the game. Real and Harrison were a one-two punch in the lineup, as each drove in three runs for the Saints. Harrison went 4-for-5 at the plate to lead the Saints in hits. Jordan Miller, McCosh, and Hudvagner each collected multiple hits for St. Clair Saints. St. Clair was sure-handed and didn’t commit a single error. Real made the most plays with eight.
Next up for the 0-2 Sault College Cougars will be back at IDA Park on Saturday, September 14th to host the 2-0 Durham Lords with game times of 3:00 p.m and 5:15 p.m.
