St Mary’s Knights Punch Their Ticket to the 2024 NOSSA Championships with Winning City Championship

On Sunday, February 25th in front of the full house, the Korah Colts and the St Mary’s Knights took to the ice for game four of the 2024 Sault Ste Marie High School Hockey League with the Knights leading the best of five series two to one.

With St Mary’s on a powerplay with 2:04 remaining in the second period, Daniel Guzzo picks up a rebound off of Colt netminder Payton Melchiorre to the right of Korah’s net. Anthony Blonda and Lucas Green added the contributors on the opening goal of game four. Scoring their second powerplay marker of the contest 57 seconds before the ten minute mark of the third, Lucas Green rifles a wrist shot from inside the centre of the blueline to be tipped by Carter Doucette to give St Mary’s a 2 – 0 lead. Nik Vecchio drew the other helper on Doucette’s powerplay goal. With 5:10 left in game four, Luca Venneri fires a slapshot through traffic to find the back of Knight goaltender Grant Matthewson to close the gap to one for the Colts. Mason Battacchio and Nathan Guizietti registered the assist on Venneri’s goal. With 21 seconds remaining in the game and Melchiorre on the Korah bench for an extra attacker, Nik Vecchio gives St Mary’s a 3 – 1 win with a Knights’ empty net unassisted goal to be crowned the 2023 – 2024 Sault Ste Marie High School Hockey League champions.

The St Mary’s Knights will now head to Sudbury, Ontario on March 4th and 5th to represent Sault Ste Marie at the 2024 NOSSA Championships.
