The St. Mary’s Knights Senior Girls soccer entered the 2023 ‘AA’ OFSAA Soccer Championships ranked #13. They went 4-0 in round robin play and continued their success through both the quarter and semifinal games, earning a berth in the OFSSA final. It was the team’s ability to always focus on their game plan; dominate ball possession, tenancy on defense and capitalize on scoring opportunities that thrust them into the OFSAA final.
The Lady Knights faced highly touted Blakelock from Oakville, who were also undefeated leading into the final, allowing only a single goal against in round robin play.
The Lady Knights remained stellar on defense throughout the final match, with Ella Zachary making several key saves keeping the Knights in the game. SMC could not capitalize on their chances during both regulation and the 20 minutes of overtime, forcing both teams into penalty kicks.
The St. Mary’s Lady Knights had to settle for a Silver OFSAA medal, coming up short 5-4 in penalty kicks. Scoring for the Knights were Ava Provazano, Abby MacKnight, Caitlin Senecal and Berlyn Killoran.
This is St. Mary’s College first Girls OFSAA Soccer medal and the first OFSAA medal for any Sault Ste. Marie girls’ soccer team.
