Over the June 30th to July 2nd weekend, the Soo U18 Black Sox headed south of the border to take part in the 2023 Gabby Mills July Fourth Invitational in Midland, Michigan.
Sunday, July 2nd, the Soo Black Box hit the diamond in Midland, Michigan to face take on the Capital City Kings in the 2023 Gabby Mills July Fourth Invitational with a 3 – 1 record.
Soo Black Sox 18U couldn’t keep up with Capital City Kings and fell 11-2 on Sunday.
Capital City Kings were the first to get on the board in the first when an error scored one run.
Capital City Kings added two runs in the second. Buckland walked, making the score 3-0.
A double by Myott extended the Capital City Kings lead to 4-0 in the top of the third inning.
Wurenberg earned the win for Capital City Kings. The starting pitcher surrendered four hits and two runs over seven innings, striking out four and walking five. Cole Masse took the loss for Soo Black Sox 18U. The starting pitcher went five innings, giving up four runs (two earned) on four hits, striking out five and walking three.
Caleb Walker drove the middle of the lineup, leading Soo Black Sox 18U with two runs batted in. The first baseman went 1-for-4 on the day. Masse, Lucas DiBerardino, Lucas Carriere, and Walker each collected one hit for Soo Black Sox 18U.
Capital City Kings accumulated 10 hits in the game. Myott and #6 each collected two hits for Capital City Kings. Hoefler, the number nine hitter for Capital City Kings, led the way with two runs batted in. The third baseman went 1-for-3 on the day.
Heading into game four of the weekend coming off a 12 – 2 win over Saginaw Beets, the Black Sox faced the Bay City Bandits in the final game of the round robin tournament at the Gabby Mills July Fourth Invitational.
Soo Black Sox 18U lost to Bay City Bandits 5-0 on Saturday.
Bay City Bandits were the first to get on the board in the first when A Robbins singled, scoring one run.
A sacrifice fly by N Sheil extended the Bay City Bandits lead to 2-0 in the top of the second inning.
K Koin earned the win for Bay City Bandits. They allowed three hits and zero runs over seven innings, striking out nine and walking two. Nolan Toni took the loss for Soo Black Sox 18U. The right-handed pitcher went four and two-thirds innings, allowing five runs (two earned) on five hits, striking out two and walking four.
Michael Starzomski, Lucas DiBerardino, and Matthew Forsey each collected one hit for Soo Black Sox 18U. DiBerardino stole two bases. Soo Black Sox 18U turned one double play in the game.
J Hortley, O Mckenny, Robbins, L Randall, P Kann, O Yens, and B Fluty each collected one hit for Bay City Bandits. Hortley, Robbins, Sheil, and Yens each drove in one run for Bay City Bandits. Bay City Bandits were sure-handed and didn’t commit a single error. Fluty made the most plays with 10.
After finishing day one with a 2 – 0 record Gabby Mills July Fourth Invitational in Midland, Michigan, the Soo U18 Black Sox met Saginaw Beets in game three of the weekend.
Keyton Mousseau drove in four runs on two hits to lead Soo Black Sox 18U past Saginaw Beets 12-2 on Saturday. Mousseau doubled in the second inning, scoring two runs, and singled in the third inning, scoring two.
Soo Black Sox 18U opened the scoring in the first after a passed ball scored one run.
Soo Black Sox 18U committed an error, which helped Saginaw Beets tie the game at one in the top of the second.
Soo Black Sox 18U flipped the game on its head in the bottom of the second, scoring five runs on three hits to take a 6-1 lead. The biggest blow in the inning was a double by Mousseau that drove in two.
Soo Black Sox 18U scored six runs on four hits in the bottom of the third inning. Michael Hapanovich singled, scoring one run, Mousseau singled, scoring two runs, Lucas DiBerardino singled, scoring two runs, and Hapanovich was struck by a pitch, driving in a run.
Hapanovich earned the win for Soo Black Sox 18U. The left-handed pitcher gave up zero hits and one run (zero earned) over two innings, striking out one and walking one. Escamilla took the loss for Saginaw Beets. The reliever went two-thirds of an inning, allowing six runs on four hits, striking out none and walking four. Kenny led things off on the mound for Saginaw Beets. They surrendered four hits and six runs (three earned) over two innings, striking out one and walking two. Michael Starzomski appeared in relief for Soo Black Sox 18U.
Owen Daynard paced Soo Black Sox 18U with two walks. Overall, the team had patience at the plate, amassing six walks for the game.
