Coming off a championship game loss in Gladwin, Michigan over the June 16th to June 18th weekend, the Sault U18 Black Sox hit the highway to Marinette, Wisconsin over the June 23rd to 25th weekend.
In their final game of the weekend, the Soo Black Sox 18U took the lead late in the game in a 5-4 victory over Marinette on Sunday afternoon. The game was tied at four with Soo Black Sox 18U batting in the top of the eighth when Jace Hill-Pine’s sac fly scored one run for Soo Black Sox 18U.
Soo Black Sox 18U earned the victory despite allowing Marinette to score three runs in the sixth inning. Marinette’s big inning was driven by singles by E Gruszynsen and K Goldsmith and a double by L Corwin.
Soo Black Sox 18U got things moving in the first inning. Carter Young’s sac fly scored two runs for Soo Black Sox 18U.
Soo Black Sox 18U evened things up at four in the top of the seventh inning when C Gallivan homered on a 3-2 count, scoring two runs.
Cole Masse pitched Soo Black Sox 18U to victory. Masse went seven and a third innings, allowing four runs on eight hits and striking out five. Michael Hapanovich threw two-thirds of an inning in relief out of the bullpen.
J Kruse took the loss for Marinette. Kruse lasted eight innings, allowing ten hits and five runs while striking out three and walking zero.
Soo Black Sox 18U tallied one home run on the day. Gallivan had a long ball in the seventh inning.
Soo Black Sox 18U collected ten hits on the day. Matthew Forsey, Gallivan, and Carmine Perna all managed multiple hits for Soo Black Sox 18U. Forsey led Soo Black Sox 18U with three hits in four at bats.
Marinette totaled eight hits. W Bieber and Gruszynsen all had multiple hits for Marinette.
For game three on Saturday afternoon, Southwest opened up scoring in the first inning. L Kippley doubled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run.
Soo Black Sox 18U evened things up at one in the top of the second inning. Michael Hapanovich drove in one when Hapanovich singled.
Southwest pulled away for good with five runs in the fourth inning. In the fourth an error scored one run for Southwest, B Wanek singled on a 1-1 count, scoring two runs, and C Bloom singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring two runs.
A Petasek pitched Southwest to victory. Petasek went seven innings, allowing one run on six hits and striking out five.
Matthew Forsey toed the rubber for Soo Black Sox 18U. The pitcher lasted four innings, allowing six hits and six runs while striking out one. C Gallivan threw two innings in relief.
Hapanovich went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Soo Black Sox 18U in hits.
Southwest racked up eight hits on the day. M Meyer and Z Lemieux each had multiple hits for Southwest.
Game two for the Soo Black Sox 18U on Saturday morning, the Black Sox watched the game slip away early and couldn’t recover in a 14-0 loss to Manitowac Ships on Saturday. Manitowac Ships scored on a double by D Schmitz, a double by B Peterson, a double by N Stephany, a single by R Stangel, a double by E Kummer, a double by E Desseilier, and a groundout by B Erdmann in the first inning.
The Soo Black Sox 18U struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing Manitowac Ships, giving up 14 runs.
Manitowac Ships opened up scoring in the first inning, when Schmitz doubled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring two runs.
One bright spot for Soo Black Sox 18U was a single by Jace Hill-Pine in the fifth inning.
B Hartlaub earned the victory on the mound for Manitowac Ships. The hurler went five innings, allowing zero runs on one hit and striking out seven.
Nolan Toni took the loss for Soo Black Sox 18U. The righty surrendered 12 runs on 11 hits over three innings.
Hill-Pine led Soo Black Sox 18U with one hit in two at bats.
Manitowac Ships had 15 hits in the game. Schmitz, T Hartlaub, Desseilier, Stangel, and Erdmann all managed multiple hits for Manitowac Ships. Manitowac Ships didn’t commit a single error in the field. B Foytik had seven chances in the field, the most on the team
Game One was on Friday, June 23rd in an evening contest, the Soo Black Sox 18U fell behind early and couldn’t come back in a 6-0 loss to Watertown on Friday. Watertown scored on a single by H Doede and a stolen base by K Eckert in the second inning.
The Soo Black Sox 18U struggled to contain the high-powered offense of Watertown, giving up six runs.
Watertown got things moving in the second inning. Doede drove in one when Doede singled.
A single by Connor Bruzas in the fifth inning was a positive for Soo Black Sox 18U.
L Fendt led the Watertown to victory on the mound. The fireballer allowed three hits and zero runs over seven innings, striking out two.
Cole Masse took the loss for Soo Black Sox 18U. Masse went two and a third innings, allowing three runs on three hits and walking zero.
Keyton Mousseau, Carmine Perna, and Bruzas each collected one hit to lead Soo Black Sox 18U.
Watertown tallied six hits. Fendt, N Walker, and Doede each managed multiple hits for Watertown. Watertown was sure-handed and didn’t commit a single error. C Hinkes made the most plays with six.
