Sault College Cougars Women’s Hockey finishes First Half Undefeated

Sault College women’s hockey finished the first half of their season undefeated after beating Northern Michigan University (NMU) in back-to-back games on Sunday, December 12, 2021.

In game one, NMU scored the first goal, but Sault College forwards Erika Beitz and Emma Lee were able to get the Cougars on the board with two goals before the end of the first period. The second saw both sides exchange multiple goals, with NMU scoring four goals and Sault College netting three to head into the third period tied 5-5. Olivia Barsanti, Jasmine Groleau and Kaitlyn Lambert-Mousseau scored for the Cougars. Sault College was able to pull away from NMU in the third with Jasmine Pitawanakwat scoring her first of the season, and Lambert-Mousseau and Barsanti each recorded their second of the game. NMU would get one late goal, but the Cougars were able to secure the win with a final score of 8-6.

Cougars outshot the Wildcats 46 to 20. Goaltender Gabriella Corbiere stopped 40 of the 46 shots.

After a three-hour break, both teams hit the ice at 5:00 pm for game two. Lee collected her 11th goal of the season half-way through the first, but NMU quickly tied it up 15 seconds later. Barsanti scored the only goal in the second period to give the Cougars a one goal lead heading into the final 20 minutes of play. In the third period, Marie-Pier Lecours, Barsanti and Beitz were able to find the back of the net and Corbiere closed the door on NMU for the 5-1 win.

Cougars outshot the Wildcats 43 to 23. Corbiere earned the win with 42 saves.

Sault College (6-0-0) will start the second half of their season on Friday, Jan 14, 2022 against Assiniboine Community College (3-1-0) at the Rankin Arena. The puck drop is 7:00 p.m.
