On July 22nd, a new era of post-secondary football in Northern Ontario begins as the Sault College Cougars Athletics football team holds its first-ever practice in program history at Rocky DiPietro Field. The Cougars are preparing for their highly anticipated debut in the Canadian Junior Football League (CJFL), with their inaugural season opener scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on August 1st as part of the Homecoming Classic.
The Cougars’ 67-man roster is a diverse and dynamic group of athletes, with players hailing from Western Canada, Southern and Southwestern Ontario, Thunder Bay, Sudbury, North Bay, Sault Ste. Marie (Ontario and Michigan), and even as far as Australia. Several players also bring previous post-secondary football experience, adding veteran presence to the first-year squad.
Head Coach Paul Orazietti spoke to Saultsports about the significance of the moment, “this sixty-seven man roster is the culmination of two years of planning, countless hours of recruiting, and a college and a community vision of post-secondary football in Sault Ste. Marie.”
Orazietti emphasized that success in the north will require more than just talent, “this class of players will need to show character, commitment, work ethic, talent, and accountability to make this program successful.”
With the foundation now laid, the Cougars are ready to take the field, representing both Sault College and the broader community with pride as they begin their journey into CJFL history.
The Cougars inaugural season opener will take place at 1:00 p.m on August 1st along with a Homecoming Classic happening on September 6th with all home games being played at Rocky DiPietro Field.
