Sault College Cougars Finish Weekend with a 1-1 Record Against LSSU Lakers

Men’s hockey came away with one win and one loss against Lake Superior State University (LSSU) over the December 10th and 11th weekend.

In game one on Friday, December 10, Hunter Buzzi opened up the scoring two minutes into the game but LSSU was able to bounce back with three goals before the end of the first. Jacob Bumbacco and Ty Zachary netted two in the second to even the score 3-3. More scoring would happen int he second with Zachary recording his second of the game on a power-play and Mitchell Devins-Cann added a short-handed goal. The Cougars had two men in the box and LSSU capitalized on the opportunity and scored two goals before the end of the second to make it 5-5. In the third period, LSSU pulled ahead by two goals. Jordan Ritchie scored a late goal with just over a minute left in the game but the Cougars ran out of time and LSSU would get the win.

Cougars goaltender Seth Ningeongan stopped 17 of the 20 shots in the first period. Goaltender Zachary Tarentini played the remainder of the game and stopped 12 of the 16 shots.

In game two on Saturday, December 11, LSSU would take a quick 3-0 lead until Caleb Wood scored in the last 18 seconds of the period. Sault College carried the momentum into the second with goals by Ritchie and Finateri to tie the game heading into the third. There would be no goals in the third and the decision would be made in a five minute four on four overtime. Wood netted his second of the game and the game winner thirty seconds into overtime.

Goaltender Zachary Tarentini earned the win with 32 saves.

The Cougars finished the first half of their season with a 6-1-0 record. They will start the second half on Friday, January 7 against Central Michigan University at ICE Arena. The puck drop is 7:00 p.m.
